Chester Debolt, of route 5, pleaded not guilty in city court today to a charge of reckless driving. Mayor John Doan set bond for SSO and January 3 as the date of the trial. Deputy sheriff Robert Shraluka investigated an accident early Sunday morinng when a car driven by Owen Lautenscblegsr. of route 3, went off the road three 1 miles east of Decatur on U. S. highway 224. Lautenschleger told deputy Shraluka that the lights of ian approaching car had blinded him in the heavy downpour, he lost control, and the car went into a fence along the highway. Damage wan estimated at 1100 to the | car. Holy City Under Shadow Os Smouldering Enmity
Jerusalem, Dec. 19. —(UP)— The advent of the Christmas season fonnd more barbed wire than holiday tinsel in Jerusalem todaymore seeds of strife than rivet* of peace. For the third straight Christmas the holy city lay under the shadow of smouldering enmity. On either side of a narrow no man's land zig-zagging through the city, khaki-clad Israelis and Arab legionnaires in red kaffiehs paced their posts. The war which raged bloodily last Christmas and was shaping up the year before was fresh in memory. Scarcely a family escaped it* harsh demands. The war-weary citizens. Christians. Jews and Arabs alike, had hoped that this Christina* would bring true peace on earth and good will-* time of quiet reconstrm tiou and healing of wounds. Now they feared that events had taken a turn toward more unrest If not worse. Israel decided last week to move its capital here from Tel Aviv. Dec. 19. -(UP)ludiana University is the fastest growing university among 713 schools surveyed for a 30-year period, the president of Cincinnati University today reported Dr. Raymond Walters said l.U.’s full-time enrollment rose from 2.354 in 1919 to its present 13.459 for the biggest proportionate increase at any major school. Walter* said Indiana* other state-supported university. Purdue, was the largest technical school in the United States, with 13.142 full-time students. Truman Concludes Vacation Tuesday Key West. Fla . Dec. 19. —(UP> — President Truman packed his beachball and bathing trunk* to day and prepared to quit the warm weather of South Florida for the cold winter and hot politics of Washington. The president had time for one more swim and sunbath before flying back to the capital tomorrow morning. He will take from Boca Chlca naval airfield at 9:45 a m. (ESTt. landing in Washington approximately four hour* later. Court Docket Called Here This Morning Judge Myles F. Parrish completed action on calling the docket today, which was attended by most of the county's attorneys. Under the law, the docket must be called at least once during one of the year’s terms. Social Security Taxes To Increase Washington. Dec. 19. — (UP)— Uncle Sam is about to take another bite out of your pay check. Start- i ing Jan. 1 social security taxes are going up. South Bend Woman Slays Her Husband Shooting Follows Violent Quarrel South Bend. Ind.. Dec. 19. — (UP)— A pretty brunet admitted today that she shot and killed her third husband—" The only one 1 really loved"-** he taunted her about her marksmanship. Mrs. lona E. Ixmg. 31, said she killed her husband Ralph, 40. as ! the culmination of a violent quarrel Sunday morning after he had knocked her down and slugged her. The argument started after a nightlong drinking party with another couple who left the Long * fashionable residence here shortly* before dawn. After the couple left, Mr*. Long said, her husband proposed that they drive to the home of her parent* at Kouts. Ind.. 50 miles southwest of here. "He wanted to go there because they always side with him In args-, rnents." she said. ‘‘lt was about < a.m. and 1 didn't think that v.as any time to go visiting. I wanted to stay home. That wa* the whole argument." She denied that she was drunk but said she had several cans of beer and a drink before the quarrel began. < As the argument progressed, she said. "Ralph threatened me and I ran Into the kitchen.” “He beat me and knocked me down,” she said. “I broke away from him, ran into the dining room and grabbed a rifle and some shells.” A* she returned to the kitchen, . she squeezed off one shot from the I .22 caliber rifle. The slug hit the I floor. "What's the matter-you losing, your alm?" I sing taunted her and deliberately turned his back to her. "Turn around," Mrs. Ixmg ordered him. “I want you to face ine when 1 shoot you.” “I won't turn around for you. 1 he said. ”1 don't want to see you , any more in my life.
