The last chapters of Jeremiah teach that the personal factor tn religion and righteousness is supreme. Let it be said also that the personal factor in evil is supreme also. V 4. “Moreover thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the Lord: shall they fall and not arise? shall he turn away, and not return? If people stumble and fall to the ground, they naturally get up again, and go on their way. if any one loses his way, does he persist in going in the wrong direction. instead of turning back, after he realizes his mistake? V 5. “Why then is the people of Jerusalem slidden back by a perpetual backsliding? They hold fast deceit, the refuse to return." In contrast with what men do in a physical sense, why do the people of Judah, when they wander away from God and fall Into sin. keep on continually in the wrong direc- ; tion? V 6. "I hearkened and heard. ■ but they spake not aright; no man repented him of his wickedness, saying. What have I done? every one turned to his course, as the: horse rusheth into battle." God is speaking after the manner of men. He listens intently to hear what the people will say, but no one utters words of confession or repentance. The question. “What have I done?" suggests repentance I but suc h a question is not heard Every one plunges ahead like a cavalry charge. V. 29. "In those days they shall say no more. The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the child-1 ren s teeth are set on edge." This was a common proverb which figuratively expressed the Idea that the children suffer for the wrongs of thuir parents. There are differi ent ways in which a person may suffer. In the early history of Israel sometimes the direct penalty of a man's sins was visited upon his family. V. 30. “But everv one shall die for I We all wish happiness, but happiness does not come by wishing. Nor can it come from circumstanc - es. it can come only from ourselves. from the spirit that is within us. You cannot choose what changes and chances are to befall you, but you can choose the spirit in which you will meet them. It takes the Christian spirit derived from above. | his own iniquity; every one that eateth sour grapes, his teeth shall be set on edge." Here is taught individual responsibility as to sin. Whatever heartache and distress, and sometimes physical injury, one may suffer as a result of the sins of parents, no one is guilty or . morally responsible for the sins ! of others. In this new dispensa- . tion. this principle of individual responsibility would be. and in fact now* Is, clearly taught. , V. 31. “Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will make . a new covenant with the house of , Israel and the house of Judah." , It is God who takes the initiative in establishing a new religious order Man could do nothing. God is every thing and man is nothing in fixing the terms of transaction This new covenant anticipates the work of grace that will be ushered in with the coming of Christ. V. 32. "Not according to the covenant I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although 1 was a husband unto them, saith the Lord.' The new covenant would he a higher order By going after false gods the children had broken their covenant with God. God was a husband in that he loved, protected, and provided for his people. V. 33. "But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; after those days, saith the Lord. I will put my lawin their inward parts, and write it In their hearts; and will be their God and they shall be my ! people." The old law was written tables of stone and on other writing material. It needed to be read and interpreted to the people by a special class of educated men Here is a forward looking prophesy of the new birth provided | by Christ; this involves conver-j ' sion whereby one is entirely transformed within so that the Christian motive dominates the life. Here Is personal religion which Jeremiah proclaimed. V. 34. “And they shall teach no more every man his neighbor. I and every man his brother, saying. Know the ixtrd; for they shall know me. from the least nf them unto the greatest of them, I saith the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remem- ; her their sin no more."
