Players Trades Are Studied By Major Leagues Baltimore. Dec. 9. —(I'P) — Baseball had plenty of unfinished business to attend to today as the duh owners wound up the annual minor league convention and headed for New York and a three day session of the major leagues next week. Big item on the agenda there will be consummation of the various deals which got only to the discussion 'stage here. There were at least five good big league trans-] actions on tap. The Braves were expected to close a deal with the Giants, the Yankees and Senators were about to do business, and the Browns were reported ready to sell a player or two to the Red Sox The Red* sought hitting strength and were] ready to give up an outfielder or two. and the Cardinals and Dodg ers, unable to do business with each other were combing the talent throughout the National league. Despite the fact that manager Billy Southworth said he was standing in support of some of the players who caused such dissension on the Braves last season, it looked like not only pitchers John ny Sain and Bob Hogue, but outfielder Jim Russell and first baseman Duke Torgeson would be with different clubs next season. The entire quartet might move to the Giants in a package deal which would Involve shortstop Buddy Kerr and outfielder Willard Marshall of that club. The Cardinals still were looking for an infielder to help out the aging Marty Marion at shortstop and It looked a* if they might work something out with the Cubs for Roy Smalley or the Reds who have ' Red Stallcup available, provided they give up a pitcher or two. Either George Munger or young lefty Ken Johnson were available but manager Eddie Dyer said It was "no go" on trading relief artist Ted Wilk* or lefties Harry Brecheen and 'Howie Pollet. all Nought hy other teams. Brooklyn had such youngsters as outfielder Tommy Brown and Gene Hermanski. and infielders Eddie Miksis and Bobby Morgan ready to pass on to any club which could give it a dependable pitcher. Thr most likely deal was with the Red* but general manager Warren Glle* said that he wasn't giving up such talented young hurlers as Howie Fox or Herman Wehmeier without getting plenty In return In the American league. Bucky Harris, the new pilot of the Washington Senator* said "sure we'd like to do business with the Yan kees or any other club for that matter, but they're going to give us somebody before we let go our best men " Off hand it looked as if Harris would keep hl* pitching ace. RayScarborough. but that he might • settle for a lesser deal involving I pitcher Paul Calvert or perhaps his J voung fireball specialist. Dick I Weik The Yankees In turn, would be willing to give up outfielder Johnny Lindell, second baseman George Btirnweiss or pitchers Spec (MMWWVWVWWWAAMAAM SUN. MON. TUES.
