San Francisco And Browns In League Playoff New York. Dec. 5. —(UP)— The ' San Francisco Forty-Niners, the first professional football team to threaten to go on strike and the only club to heat mighty Cleveland during the past three years, will play the Browns next Sunday for the All-American conference playoff championship. The Forty-Niners, who soon thought better of their threat to strike unless each player received for playing New York in the playoff senmifinal. beat the Yank-1 ees, 17 to 7, yesterday. Cleveland gained the other playoff spot by i putting on one of its patented fin- ■ Ishes to beat a stubborn Buffalo Bills team. 31 to 21. A in-yard touchdown run by Verl Lillywhite, Frankie Albert's 10-yard i>ass to Don Garlln and' a 30-yard field goal by Joe Vet- j tano put the Forty-Niners in line for a big slice of the players' share of the championship game at Cleveland Thus, they'll get the extra money they wanted anyway. 1 Buffalo took a 21 to 17 lead ini the third period on George Rat-1 termans 30-yard touchdown pass 1 to Chet Mutryn. That was tho Bills’ liigh water mark. The Browns immediately marched 100 yards. Quarterback Otto Graham climaxed the drive with a 49-yard touchdown pass to Dub Jones. To make victory certain. Warren Lahr intercepted one of Halterman's fourth period heaves and ran 52. yards for a touchdown. In the National la-ague, the Western Division leaders seemed determined to force the Philadel-I phia Eagles. Eastern title winners, , to doubt their scouting corps. While the Eagles lumbered to a 24 to 3 victory over the New York I Giants, the Chicago Cardinals heat the Los Angeles Rams. 31 to 27, In the- final seconds of play to prevent the coast team from clinch-1 Ing the western title. The Bj-ars. however, have a tougher break They play their annual grudge game with the Cardinals. Quarterback Paul Christman led the Cardinal rally which overcame; a 24 to 2 Los Angeles lead. Christ-1 man engineered three touchrowns drives, topping his performance' with a 24-yard scoring pass to end Bill Dewell just .before the game ended. Steve Van Buren, although held to 53 yards, broke his own league ground gaining record for a single 1 season as Phildelphia's big line I wore down the Giants. Van Bur- 1 en has 1.050 yards so far this i year and gets another crack at the ■ Giants next week. In other national league contests. the Washington Redskins unveiled a ground attack to beat i the Green Hay Packers, 30 to 0, ' and the Detroit Lions got out of the Western Division cellar for the first time in four years by erging the New York Bulldogs. 28 to 27. Doc. 5. — (UPI — Sideline photoraphers who did a little eavesdropping said today that Notre Dame's Fighting Irish might be more aptly named the "crying I Irish ” This was one of the many com- ' ments which poured forth in the wake of the 27-20 squeak Notre Dame scored over Southern Methodist Saturday. Although the Irish Jhus finished their fourth consecutive season without a defeat, setting a new record, tlvwir detractors were many. One veteran photographer, who roamed the sidelines in front of the Irish bench in pursuit of his duties, said, "why those guys were crying at every decision of the officialfl, and not just the ones even the fanfl thought might be in error. I "SMU got as many bad breaks as the Irish on decisions, but they | were way behind on the squawking." Southwest conference ooaches who saw the game from the grandstand were not overly Impressed by i the Notre Dame might. Blair Cherry of Texas said he didn't think Notre Dame could keep ! up such a pace if it played a full Southwest Conference schedule. He pointed out that the Irish were j played almost to a standstill by ar. SMU team which lost three conference games this season. Frank Leahy, coach of the South Bend, Ind . team which now lias gone 38 games without a loss, told his players yesterday, "go to church and thank God for your victory ovier Southern Methodist." Leahy said the new spread and triple wingback formations uncovered by SMU especially for this game baffled his team. But he was quick lo add he never thought Notre Dame would lose, not even when SMU's "Kolossal Kyle" Rote banged over with his third touchdown to tie the score at 20-20. Matty Bell, the SMU mentor, admitted he thought at this point his ! team might win. "But It juat was not in the books, I guess.” he add ed. The near-upset here overshadow ed but did not blot out a second tn- ; dication that Auburn is reversing its form. Auburn won its second Southeastern Conference victory in two years by a 14 to 13 win over Alabama thanks to sophomore Bill Tuckers' two points after touchdown. The University of Cincinnati whipped Toledo. 33 to 13, in the Glass Bowl at Toledo and Evans ville, Ind., knocked Hillsdale, Mien., out of the unbeaten, untied claaa, 22 to 7. in the Refrigerator Bowl at Evansville South Carolina beat the Citadel. 42-0, in a Southern Conference game Thus the regular season ended with IS undefeated and untied teams, with only Hillsdale eliminated from last week's list The teams are Notre Dame. Minor Leagues Open Annual Convention Baltimore. Dec. 5.—(UP)— A three way "little world aeries" which might even rival the big one between the American and Na tlonal leagues was In the works today ax upward* of 1,200 baseball men moved in for the annual minor league convention. Discnuion of an all-inclusive posbseavon serie* between the pennant winners in the International league, American Association and Pacific Coast league even over shadowed the other big Item* on the agenda- today's minor league player draft and a battle on repeal of the bonus player rule. AH three class AAA league presidents, Frank Shaughnessy of the International, who proposed the Idea. Bruce Dudley of the American Association and Clarence Rowland of the Pacific Coast league agreed some kind of plan should be worked out to determine a "true minor league champion." Shaughnessy suggested the winner of the annual International league-Association playoff travel weat to meet the Pacific Coast winner. He also recommended that the winner and perhaps the run-ner-up be sent Into the Pacific to play post-season games in Japan and other outposts because of the i growing popularity of baseball in ' the Pacific. Regarding baseball's much-blast--led bonus player rule, whereby young kid* signed for fancy cash awards are subject to restrictions that hamper them or their clubs throughout their careers, there was nothing but confusion. Baseball commissioner A. B Chandler, who Is not expected to attend the meetings here, had predicted the bonus rule would be repealed and he had support from the agecutive council of the major leagues. Furthermore, the majority of minor club owners agree the regulations are far from satisfactory. Conservation Club Fox Hunt Saturday The conservation club of Decatur will hold a fox hunt Saturday, it was announced today by C. F. Zimmerman. secretary of the club. All persons Interested in participating in the hunt, Zimmerman said, should meet at the south side of the courthouse at 8 am. Zimmerman aald there was a large territory to cover, and urged a good representation of Decatur people for the hunt. He aald he bad been notified there would be men from Geneva, Berne and Willshire participating, and hoped that local men would show up in quantity. He explained that the extent of the hunt depended largely on the number of men aaaembled. and arged all intereated persons to meet at the courthouse. GOVERNMENT (Coot. From Page One) activities) by education and qoperative effort, leading to volun tary and wholehearted compliance with legal requirements." The committee's proposals will be forwarded to Mr. Truman. Sawyer said the group will work with all types of business. Including insurance and transportation He did not say where labor union* would be brought into the picture.
