I Comments i.On | Lesson Creamed Comments on the Sunday School lesson, Jeremiah De nounroe False Prophets. Jeremiah 23:16-32, for Sunday, December 4. Human nature untouched by the guiding hand of God becomes corrupt in priest and |M*ople alike. A mere professing religionist is a false prophet. In this lesson may lie seen what makes false prophets. V. 16. "Thus saith the Lord of hosts. Hearken not untn the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you; they make you vain; they speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the < Lord." "They make you vain” means that the false prophets' first aim was to please the people; these prophets play u their imaginations ommltting God; they are not God's spokesmen. V. 21. “I have not sent these prophets, yet they ran. I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied." The false prophets are earnest as indicated by the | word "ran." This increases their deception. V 22. "But If they had stood in my counsel, and had caused my 1 iceopie to bear my words, then ■ they should have turned them from, their eril way. aud from the evil I of their doings" These falseprophets did not produce any conviction of sin in the people, another mark of their standing. V. 23. "Am I a God at hand, saith the Lord, and not a God afar off?” When the presence of Gud is questioned it naturally follows that ! man acts independently ot him. No man can have victory in life and death without God. V. 24. "Can any man hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the I .ord. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the Ixjrd. ' God is omnipresent. No one can hide from him False con-. ceptions of God make false prophets. V. 25-- "I have heard what the prophets said, that prophesy lies in my name, saying. I have dreamed. I have dreamed.” Here were false claims of receiving God's revelations; they simply dreamed IA Out Pteadwi There is a relation between having. doing, and iteing. What you are will determine what you do and what you have. If your objective is the acquisition of things, you wilt become empty. If your goal is popular acclaim through activity, you will become improverisbed personally. If your purpose is enrichment of spirit and the betterment of other persons, you will become valuable. Trinity Evangelical United Brethren Madison at Ninth John E. Chamber*. Minister 0:16 am. — Sunday School; Chalmer Barkley. as man dreams. V. 26. “How long shall this be in the heart of the prophets that prophesy lies? yea they are prophets of the deceit of their own hearts.” This verse shows the state of Jeremiah's mind. He had_< almost reached the end of his patience. at indicated by the words. l "How long?" , V. 21. "That think to cause my people to forget my name by their dreams which they tell every man to his neighbor, as their fathers have forgotten my name for Baal." The people suffer when taught false prophesies. Here again is emphasised the common sin, namely, forgetting God. V. 28. "The Prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream; and he that hath my word , let him speak my word faithfully. What is | the chaff to the wheat? saith the Lord.'The point here is thst it ought to have been made clear that what was uttered was merely a dream and not a divine revelation. The chaff represents the worthless messages of these prophets. V. 20. “Is not my word like n fire? saith the laird: and like a hammer that breaketh the rock In pieces?” Instead of being something that flatters and hearers, the word of God Is stern and potent, like a fire and like a hammer, I consuming the dross, and breaking 1 the stony heart. V2O. "Therefore. I am against I the prophets, saith the laird, that , steal my words, every one from his neighbor." The false prophets ! had no message of their own, but . they repeated jtortions of messages which they heard the true prophets speak These would give greater plausibilities to their false teachings. V. 31. "Behold, I am against the prophets, saith the Lord, that use their tongues and say. He saith.” In the phrase, “that use their tongues.” the prophets added their own Interpretations even when using God's revealed truths. Misappropriation of God's word makes false teachings. V 32. "Behold I am against them that prophesy false dreams, saith | the Lord, and do tell them, and ( . cause my people to err by thejr' - lies and by tbeir lightness. Yeti II sent them not nor commanded them; therefore they shall not profit these people at all. saith the Ixtrd.” The people's being led astray was most tragic. j will be "My God and I". The communion meditation by the minister will be “The Incarnation." The | special ‘communion offering will j go for support of our missionary in New Mexico. Miss Charlene Sanders.
