LEGION AUXILIARY MEETING IS HELD The American Legion auxiliary held its regular business meeting ■ Friday evening at the Legion home. Announcement was made that the auxiliary will entertain the Gold Star women of the < ounty al the social meeting on No ; vember 25. Mem | bers are asked to bring an unwrap-1 ped gift for the gift shelf at this I meeting, or leave it at the Legion home in the next few weeks. The hospitalized veterans will choose gifts for their families from these shelves. A Christmas party will lie held i on December «. The dinner will lie followed by a dollar gift exchange. The yearly magazine drive will be made hi the near future, with the proceeds used to purchase some type of medical equipment. Christmas gifts will also be sent to the Indiana Girls school and the unit's adopted boy at Knightstown home. Members we also urged to pay their dues before the last week of ; November to enable the .unit to . meet their quota and receive their I merits. Dues may be sent to the I Legion home or Margaret Kiting, or members may call 5591. Re|>orts were then made of the president and secretary conferences and the fourth district meeting held recently. Nov. 14 (I I’l i A college sophomore was held on an open charge today wlii e p<di< e investigated the Nddnaping and chloroforming of a nlne-year-old girl. Held was Benedict L. Driscoll Jr., 22. Newport, R I. an eng! neering stud- nt at Tri-State college here. Howard Morton. 42. said he found Driscoll and Morton’s younp daughter when he investigated a thumping noise In a dance hall above Morton’s restaurant early yesterday. The girl was unconscious and police said she apparently was drugged with chloroform They said they found a bottle of chloroform in Driscoll's pocket. Police said Morton to'd them the girl was tak n from Morton’s ' automobile parked outside the restaurant while her 12-year-old sister slept beshle her. Prosecutor Harris W Hubbard said he had an ‘‘incomplete" written statement from Driscoll admitting that he took the girl. I Marilyn Mae Morton, out of the i car and carried her upstairs to the I dance hail. Hubbard said Driscoll also ad--1 mitted holding a chloroformdrenched cloth to the girl's face. But lie said the youth did not explain whether he harmed the girl sexually. The prosecutor said the girl "may have been molested'’ but he believed she was not raped. Hubbard expected to file a specific charge against Driscoll later today. He said he had learned Driscoll once was questioned in a morals case at Fort Wayne. Hubbard quoted the child's father as saying lie found the girl and Driscoll when he c! lin bed the stairs with a gun in his hand to investigate a "noise.” Morton forced Driscoll to carry the unconscious girl downstairs, thinking she was asleep. "If I knew then what I know i now the state probably wouldn't have to try him." Morton was quoted as saying.
