I Comments r>- On Creamed Comments on the- Sunday School Lesson, The .Moral . Basis for True Worship. Isaiah 1:11-18; Jeremiah 7:3-7. for Sunday. October 9. God had planned outward ex pres - * sions of worship for Israel which at the time came from reverence and a right mental attitude toward God. In time the inward feeling of reverence died out leaving only the outward expression in forms and rituals, in sacrifices and religious customs. V 11. "To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices to me? I I am full of burnt offerings or ratns and the fat of beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs or of goats.” The repetition of tormal acta of worship may cause a routine of habit so that these expressions are like phonograph records which may be songs without the singer. Emphasis needs always tw be given to the purpose of any expression. In true worship the purpose of God becomes the purpose of the worshi|>er. V 12. "When ye come to appear before me. who hath required this at your hand, to tread my courts?' The people came into the temple with little or no religion intent; 1 they were trampling God’s courts. • when their hearts were far from him. V 13. "Bring no more vain oblations. incense is an alsjmination unto me. the new moons and sabbaths. the calling of assemblies,' 1 cannot away with, it is iniquity.' even the solemn meeting " The ob- , lations were vain because they were devoid of the proper spirit of “ humility and repentance. The solemn meetings were the particular outstanding days ot the different feasts, times when high moments of true worship would be expected; even at these limes true reverence was absent. V. 14. "Your new moons and your ..ppolnted feasts my soul hateth: i thay tmiwv trouble to me; I am weaiVrilKbear them.” The new moons refer to the monthly festiI vals (Numbers 28;11). These are i of the same pattern as those de- . scribed in former verses. V 15. "And when ye spread forth vour hands I will hide mine eyes I -

I. from you. Yea. when ye make h many prayers, I will not bear ou; [ your hands are full of blood." I. Even the prayers when devoid of ' reverence for God are an abomi- ; nation. V. 14. "Wash you. make yon clean j Jut away the evil of your doings from before mine eyea; cease to do evil." Washing is symbolical of •he cleansing of the life and heart from sin. V. 17. "Learn to do well; seek judgment; relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.” Only he does well who is at his beat for God. Seeking judgment means seeking justice; God and man must have their just dues .Moffatt says, "relieve the oppressed" means "put a check on violence." True charity for the fatherless and widows is a good test of discipleship. V.lB. "Come now, let us reason together with the Lord, though your sins be as scarlet they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall as wool." God treats men as rational beings and therefore makes an appeal to the better self. God declares the sin of the deepest dye can be transformed into purity of whiteness. V. 3. “Thus saitb the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel. Amend your ways and doings, and I will cause you to dwell in this place." "Ways" means the settled habit, and “doings” the separate acts which form them;” this place" Is Jerusalem. Here is the teaching of true repentance which has its evidence in fruit. V. 4. "Trust ye not in lying words, saying. The Temple of the Lord, the Temple of the Lord, the Temple of the Lord, are these." The people based the spiritual security in the fact of the temple being God's house as if there were a charm alwut it. V. 5. "For if ye thoroughly a mend your ways and doings: If ye thoroughly execute judgment between a man and bis brother."' Safety lies In a thorough reformation of conduit, not in the presence of a building from which' God could withdraw himself, ('bur-ch-going and that alone is not salvation. V. 6. "Then will I cause you to dwell in this place In the land that I gave to your fathers, for ever and ever." The holy land was promised to the Jews on condition that they be obedient. Here l.i thought as to the Jewish state today.
] her without joining! In John 12:32. Jesus said. “And I 1. if I be lifted up from the earth. ' will draw all men unto me. This He said, signifying what death he should die.” In Acts 20:28 are I these words "The Church of God. Which He (Christ) hath purchased with his own blood." Many texts I conclusively prove that Christ was lifted up and that his blood was shed upon the cross By virtue i of this shedding of his blood men were drawn to him. Being drawn. ! they were saved: being saved. they were made full-fledged members of his church. Acts 2:47. Affiliated with the Church trf God, General Offices, Anderson. Indiana. LESSON PRAYER: Ixtsson prayer: We are grateful ; for having been created above aII other creatures that we alone can ; worship God; grant that we may. so attend to worship habit that It i will be our best habit. Forbid that i we shall ever allow the form of godliness without the power there|of.”
