DEVOTIONAL READING: Pea Im MK awn Seven-Day Religion l.eeeen for October 9, 1999 Employers don't care much for lettoru of recommendation aigned by preachers. Not that the* think preacheri are dishonest The employer is glad to know where the chap is on Sunday mornInga. But he would rather have • letter from somebody who sees him every Saturday night and Mon- ( day morning. see Religion Won't Keep Sweet by Itself IT IS a temptation as old as religion, to put it on one side of a wall and life on the other. But the prophets showed, cnee and for
al), that God has literally no use for religion which has been dissected off from life. Religion which is kept apart from life turns sour and bad. In Isaiah's time, everybody knew there was something wrong with the. country.
Isaiah’s diagnosis was shocking: Religion is our principal trouble. God is tired at it. What? The pious people would exclaim. Look at the crowds in the Temple every holy day! Listen to all the prayers, count the number of tithers. If anything is wrong with our country, it can't be religion! But religion it ' was. Why God Was Tired A CATHOLIC priest would shock everybody should he call Vat- | lean City •'Helfs Half Acre." , Isaiah shocked his fellow citisens ; by calling Jerusalem "Sodom and Gomorrah." Those cities were the worst places the Hebrews had ever : heard of. Thrr were so bad the Lord had to destroy them by fire—not it rood people could be found there. The prophet fotlows up that first shock by another. Every single repression of srsanired rrbglen comes nadir the prophet's task. Sacrifices and offerings (v.lll. , attendance at the sanctuary, observance of the Sabbath and other holy days <v. 11). church gatherings. corresponding to our rallies and conventions <v. 13>. e'en prayers (v. 15). Put that into modern terms: attendance at church. Bible reading, tithing, praying—if that is all. then all is no good. It may be religion, and of course It is one kind of religion; but not the kind God wants. * Indeed. Isaiah says Gad hates it; he Is "fed up" with it ivw. 111. What was wraegf Isaiah tells them that. too. io short simple words. "Tear hands are foil of blood." Oh. the people would protest, we are not killers, we don't lay a hand on anybody. Isaiah goes on to explain: seek judgment lie. justice), relieve the oppreyed. judge the fatherless, plead for the widow. You don't kin outright, you churchgoers, he would say. but you are so indifferent to justice • in your city, you take so little in- j t ere st‘in the i>eople at the bottom of the heap, that people die here, widows and orphans die, simply because no one cases. • • • What Makes a Town Worth Saving? ALAS, nobody did care. One hundred and more years went by. and Jerusalem came close to , its end. But nobody thought that disaster could strike. The belief had grown in every one's mind I that the Temple of the Lord »uuld i forever insure the Safety of the * city in which it stood. Bat a young prophet. Jeremiah. preached a sermon on the same theme as Isaiah's (Jer. T> It is not Ibe temple that will save you. Il Is act cborrh attendance that win bring you the favor of God.
