September 25. 1 A study <>f our chnrch hymns reveals that many are based on some j Psalm "Saviour. Like a Shepherd Lead Us" is based <»n the 23rd Psalms "Guide .Me. Oh Thou Great Jehovah ' is based on Psalms 38:8; ‘78:52. David, the author of many ; of the Psalms, was called the sweet of Israel. V I. “The Lord is my Shepherd. I shall not want.” The figure of the shepherd descrilies God as One who cares for his own. who knows us by name, who guards us. who guides us. who seeks the lost one God so completely supplies our m eds that htere is no want for any good thing as indicated in the following verses. V. 2. "He maketh me to lie down in green pastures. He leadeth tne besides the sttll waters." Cattle grazing in a godd pasture eat themselves so full that they lie down with plenty of green grass all around So n child of God finds bounteous divine provisions all about him. which completely satisfy him. "He leadeth me beside the • till water*” teaches that as a result of Gods' provisions, there is peace and freedom from fear and worry. V. 3. "He restoreth my soul; he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for ills name's sake." God converts and nourishes. God Is all good, and when he is given leader ship, one is guided aright. V I. "Yea. thougli I walk through the valley ot the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for thou art with me, thy r<»d and thy staff they comfort me." Death is out great physical enemy; he is on our trai ks.we can not Mcape him; hut j we can have the conquering power offered by the Lord giving us the assurance of victory. V. 5. "Thou prepares! a table before me in the presence of mine enemies, thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over When one is filled with God's i spirit, when the Lord resigns within, there is produced su h spiritual courage and strength as will en aide one to face enemies and con

■ quer them. I V. 6. "Surely goodness and merI cy shall follow me all the days of II my life; and I will dwell in the ' house of the laird forever.” The Ii Lord will give a happy eternity and i that is wiiat counts most. Not I only •this, but while living, one .' may be happy. "No good will God i ■ withhold from him that walketh uprightly." V.l. "As the hart panteth after , the water brooks. So panteth my , soul after thee." The panting of I the soul does not mean any physiI cal action but a longing desire for a blessing that may be withheld for a time. 1 V 2. "My soul thirsteth for the living God; when shall 1 come and appear before God?” David had fled from Jerusalem. Because of - his absence from the Holy City, be i felt with special keenness his üb- , sence from the tabernacle and its services. V.l. "Lord, thou hast been our , dwelling place in all generations." God is our dwelling place in the sense that It is in him that we take our refuge. A godly person goes to him with his troubles as surely i as a man goes to his own home. The Lord is contrast with all others, can always be our dwelling place because he is eternal. V 2. "Before the- mountains were brought forth, or ever them hadst termed the earth, and the world, even from everlasting to everlast Ing. thou art God." Mountains are mentioned because they are among the grandest earthly works of God, and also are very old. God is a I bove time; his might Is not Imprisoned within the confines of a schedule. V. 16. "l*et thy work appear unto thy servants, and thy glory to their children." There Is meant, "some vast exertion of the divine power and majesty which will result in good to all men." — Rawlinson. God will reveal his glory to the coming generation through the works that he will perforin. Os course, his glory has been already revealed to all men through his works in the heavens and in the earth. V. 17. "And let the beauty of the i laird our God be upon us; and establish thou the works of our hand» upon us. yea. the works of our hands establish thou it." This ' is a prayer that the gracious kindness of the Lord may attend our , ways and may make the work of cur hands worthwhile. .
