Free Man Sentenced To Life In Prison Hammond. Ind.. Sept. 21. —(VP) — Roy Grisby. who wits ordered freed by s federal judge after serving 11 years of a life sentence for murder, will be released Friday, prison authorities said today. Grigsby, 58, was freed by district judge Luther M. Swygert in a habeas corpus action. He was convicted in 1938 of the death of John Gaut who, according to witnesses. suffered a skull fracture during a fist fight with GrigFby. Janies Cooper, state public de fender, testified before Swygert that Grigsby was not advised of his legal rights before pleading guilty to the murder charge. Strike Threatens Burlington Road Attempt To Avert Authorized Strike Chicago. S'pt. 21 - (VP) - Burlington railroad officials m<-t today with representatives of four operating railroad brotherhoods in an attempt to avert a strike already authorised by the four un- | ions. I The s’rike would affect the 6,000 miles of Chicago. Burlington • and Quincy system operations in 12 states. # C. H. Atkins, general chairman of the Burlington lodges of the locomotive engineers said no strike date has been set. He said that within three weeks, however, a date might be selected. “At this time it does not look like a peaceful settlement.” Atkins said. "Negotiations have been anything but satisfact; Th* meeting today continued attempts to settle 412 pay claims and grievances advanced by the un-* ions. Negotiations have been in progress since July 19. 1948. Since then all but 412 of the original I.(MW) grievances have been settled Some of those remaining date back to 1943. Authorization for the strike was voted by 95 percent of the 7,000 Burlington members of the four unions which include the Brotherhood of I*ocomotive Firemen and Engineman.
