Fair officials predicted that thin year's fair, because of its extra day, would top last year's attendance of 148,928, but they said they doubted if it would equal or surpass the alltime record of more than 87,000, set at the first postwar fair in 1940. The Odon-Madison township band from Daviess county won the annual high school marching band competition yesterday. Runner-ups included Gary Froebel. Morton of Knightstown, Alexandria, Lebanon and Bunkerhill Fort Wayne South and Hammond Clark took top honors In the 19tn annual school newspaper contest, sponsored by the Indiana University Sigma Delta Chi chapter. Hong Kong Struck By Severe Typhoon British Colony is Hard Hit By Storm Hong Kong. Sept. 8 — (UP) A typhoon smashed thia IlritiMh 1 crown colony today and the city Htarted digging itself out of the ! debris as the storm roared off to the south. Fifteen thousand British troops who left their tents and moved into barracks, mess balls and cookhouses started netting up their tent cities again. Meantime, authorities announced that 14 Chinene crewmen still were misdng In the explosion and sinking of the 1,931 ton British ship Chaksang in Hong Kong harbor. Fifty two persons, including European officers and crewmen, were rescued. The typhoon also drove the British steanur Inchmull aground All British navy ships, except the Amethyst of Yangtze river fame, put to sea before the storm struck. The little Amethyst, which ran a gantlet of communist guns to escape from the Yangtze, rode out life typhoon lied to a buoy.
