She testified that she transmitted atolen information from government employes til Washington to Soviet agents in New York. She fell in love with the late Jacob Coles. whom she identified as the real head of the communist party. But in IMS. she said, her conscience troubled her and she went to the federal bureau of investigation *lth her story. She said she stayed in the communist party as an FBI informer for the follow'inp year and a half. In her testimony last summer she named numerous highly placed government officials of the new d»al era as members of the communist underground, but all of them denied it or refused to testify. After her conversion to Catholicism, she returned to obscurity, but last spring it was reported that she was negotiating with Mundelein for a teaching job. She was born in Connecticut of conservative Republican parents 4" years ago and was educated in public schools in New York and Pennsylvania Later she went to Vassar, where she was graduated with honors in 193<». She got her master's degree at Columbia University, and studi ed abroad at the University of Florence in 1934 and 1336.

Polio Epidemic On Increase In Nation 3,049 New Cases In Country Last Week Washington. Aug 18—(UP)— A total of 3.049 new polio cases were reported to the public health service last week—the worst period to date in the 1949 polio epidemic. The figure, based on incomplete returns from state health authorities. does not Include the total for Texas which has been one of the year's worst ‘‘polio epidemic areas." Health service officials said the Texas report would probably add at least 100 more cases to the week's total, placing the figure well over the 3.150 mark. (Reports from Austin, Tex.. quoted state health officer George W. Cox as saying 109 victims were reported in Texas last week. May Revive Wabash River Dredge Project Berne, Aug. 18. — A possibility was seen here today that the matter of dredging the Wabash river through this area will some up again in the near future. The famed Wabash river dredge case which was in the Adams county circuit court for more than 25 years and carried to higher courts, was dropped from the court dockets just a few months ago. Now Jay and Adams county farmers are said to have shown an interest in joining Mercer county. Ohio, farmers in a twostate Wabash river drainage project. Mercer county commissioners John Dorsten and Ed Fleck, and B. R. Gebhart, drainage engineer, recently “walked" the Wabash river in Jay and Adams counties with interested farmers of the two counties. Tbe Mercer county officials are reported to be in favor of a three-county project.

Jobless Pay Claims Decrease In Slate Continued, Initial Claims On Decrease Indianapolis, Aug. 18 —(UP) — The Indiana employment security division today reported big drops in both continued and initial claims for jobless pay. Division director Everett L. Gardner said continued claims dropped 28 percent to 42.591 from 59.382. Initial claims fell 46 percent from 15,408. Gardner raid the huge drop in initial applications was not considered significant since the figure for the week ending Aug 4 includ ed 7.300 claims from veterans transferring to state payments from federal. The nutnner of applications filed by jolt seekers remained about steady last week, he said. Nonagricultural Job openings contlnu ed to rise slightly. Gardner said, with increases in more than half of the division's offices. “The increased demand for pro duction workers adds an encouraging note to the general economic outlook." Gardner said. Five Arrests Made For Geneva Fracas Berne, Aug. 18. — Five arrests have been made at Geneva as the result of a near-riot in that town early last Sunday morning. The persons arrested are Pat Hough, on an assault and battery charge, and Robert Myers, Willard Lawr rence. Darrell Blowers and Willis i Dickason, all of Geneva or comi inunity. The latter four were artested for disorderly conduct The . men were arrested by Harold Hlrsthy, Geneva town marshall, ', and arraigned in Geneva J. P. I court.
