Chicagoans Face Gasoline Drought , Tank Truck Drivers Are Out On Strike Chicago. Au? 11 IPUI - Motorists in Chicago and surrounding communities faced a gasoline drought today as more than 2,000 AFL tank truck drivers Went on Strike and shut off deliveries to filling stations. The drivers, members of the Chicago drivers union of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, voted to strike last night to back up their wage and hour demands. They normally d< liver 3,400,000 gallons of gasoline daily to a 50mile area including, besides Chicago, Gary and Hammond. Ind. and Waukegan and Wheaton. 11l The strike was called against 225 companies in the area, including the major oil companies that control most of the city's 3.500 filling stations. Union officials said that the stations had about a three day supply of gas on hand, delivery of lubricating and fuel oil also was stopped by the strike. The companies have met union demands for a 17’v cent hourly wage boost but on the condition that tiie men work a Tuesday tie Saturday shift rather than the present Monday-to Friday work week. *The union claims this would eliminate Saturday overtime payments Arrangements were made by the union to supply gasoline to police, fire departments, hospitals, public

Aug. 11 — 1 (UP) The new European ass< .n- --> bly elected Belgium's Paul-ilenri Spaak its first president by acclamation today, then split along par- ' ty lines in a bitter battle over the • four vice presidencies. 1 At the same time. Winston Churchill and 24 other memliers in- ' jected another controversy into the assembly by submitting a motion to add a debate on human rights to the agenda. The committee of ministers, other and governing body of the council of Europe, already hud rejected by a vote of 7 to 4 a proposal for such a debate. The majority contended that the problem already was being handled by the United Nations. However, the assembly might overrule the minister by a two-thirds vote.
