Jobless Survey In Census This Month Determine Extent Os Unemployment The extent to which persons are unable to find sufficient employ nient will be studied in the census bureau’# current population survey this month. It •« announml by district supervisor Umlx B.i llashelier of Fort Wayne. The curi.nt population survey interviews] each month a representative cross I : section of 2 5.000 households throughout the country, including a number in the Decatur area. in order to measure the Impact of layoffs ar.d reduced hours ujx>n the nation's employment situation, the regular questions on employ ment and unemployment which #re asked each month, will be supple minted this month and periodically hereafter by special questions a«T dressed to persons who worked only part time during the survey week These persons will be asked the reason they were working short hours and whether they desired full-time employment. In May. the most recent month in which a similar study was undertaken. It was estimated from the survey that about 2H million persons were working less than fulltime because of slack work, mi i terial shortages, job turnover, the unavailability of fulltime jobs or similar economic factors. This number hsd about doubled since . last year. The survey will be conducted in • Allen and Adams counties during the week of August 14 to 2« , Supervisor Bashelier emphasized . that all individual information furnished to the census bureau is treated In absolute confidence and 1 that only statistical summaries are ever published The next total eclipse of the ’ moon, visible generally throughout r North America, will occur on Oct.
