New Speculation On Barkley's Romance Vice President On Flight To St. Louis Washington. Aug. I—(UP) — Vice president Alb«u W. Harkley Look his attractive St. Louis widow "friend'" to the baseball game in the Missouri, city yesterday. And his pals here wished they knew the score on something besides the ball game They sard that for all they knew, the 71-yearold widower flew 150 miles from bis Paducah, Ky. home to St. Louis just to see the St. Louis Cardinals beat the New York (Hants. Hut they said th«y doubted it. Even though Barkley isn't talking much, they said, his statements to St. Louis newsmen make them think there may be something to rumors of a romance between Bark ley and Mrs. Carleton 8. Hadley, an attractive brunette. They promised to ask him point blank about the chance remark of Dr. E M. Connor, a friend of Mrs. Hadley, that Baikiey and Mrs. Hadley "are very fond of each other, but there's nothing in the wind yet." Just what, they demanded, did Connor mean by that "yet." Barkley arrived in St. Louis just about game time. Nitty in a gray, pin-striped suit, he sat with Mrs Hadky and a party of her friends in a field box. He remarked that he missed lunch so he would be on time. Mrs. Hadley was concerned. But Barkley reassured her. "I’m not hungry—a man's not hungry when be has food for thought." he remarked. He ate only a hot dog. Reporters at first got nowhere, when they tried to quiz him on his relationship with Mrs. Hadley. "The Cardinals look good," Barkley told them. "Who's in first place anyway. "This is the second game I've seen this year and I enjoyed it Im mensely." • After the game, he had a big dinner at the swank Bellerive Country Club. Then he drove to the airport to fly back to Washing ton Reporters asked him if be would return to St. Louis soon. "I've been coming to St. Loul* ever since I was a boy." he said "My daughter formerly lived here I've been coming to St. Ixrnis for this and other attractions." And how, they persisted, does Mrs. Hadky rate among these attractions? They reminded him rumors are flying. "Rumors are always flying." he said. "I find Mrs. Hadley a very charming and lovely woman and she has very nice friends. 1 enjoy being with them." And that was as far as he'd go. It was Barkley's second date
