From Page One) Indiana’s 1949 state fair will be held unless there is a “marked increase" in polio throughout the state, health board and state fair officials said today. "It is possible but not probable the fair will be cancelled." said Carl Tyner, secretary-manager of the fair board. "We have no plans to cancel it at present but would consider such action If polio showed a big increase within the next week or so." However. Tyner pointed out the increase in polio during the past two weeks was not considered alarming for the state as a whole. He said there was no consideration of fair cancellation on the basis of recent polio figures. He said the polio outbreak was not centered in the Indianapolis area although it has spread to a number of counties*. Health officials said the heavy-hit polio areas were in the northeast section of the state. "in the past, the Indiana state fair has been called oft only because of wars." Tyner said "We feel that it will not be railed off this year." He said the fair was called off In 1861 because of the Civil War and during World War 11. He said the fair was held dur Ing World War I. Dr. Leory E. Burney, state health commissioner, met with Tyner and an assistant today and discussed the matter "If the fair were next week, we would not call it off." Burney said following the conference with Tyner. "However, if the |»olio rate increase is marked during the next two weeks, we would consider rilling off the fair " Butney said citizens of Jay. Ran dolph. Delaware and Union conn ties may be requested not to attend the fair, "granting that It is held and it probably will be." Mean* b*is. state ta.r oHk«als i were spreadin* a blanket <4 DDT

Temporary Rise In Jobless Pay Claims Increase Is Caused By Initial Claims Indianapolis, Aug. 4. — (UP)— Today jobless pay claims registered with the state employment security division last week climbed more than 3,000 over the number riled in the previous week. But Col. Everett Gardner, division director, said tjie rise was temporary and was caused by 18,552 initial claims. Gardner said many of the claims were filed by automotive workers laid <»ff temporarily because of model changes. Excluding the automotive claims, Gardner said, last week s total of initial claims would have been the lowest for any week this year. Total claims jumped from 66, 997 to 70,1/37. Continued claims continued to drop, from 56.795 to 51,485, but initial claims were registered by 18,552 newly unemployed, compared with 10,202 in the week ending July 23. Gardner said fewer persons made new applications for work through the division last week. He said nonagricultural job placements showed a gain for the third consecutive week, and agricultural placements almost doubled the previous week's total. SCOTT QUITS (Cont. From Page One) refused to take the job. Scott's blunt objections to Gabrielson's candidacy included the charge that an effort was being made to seize committee control In behalf of special interests. If the chairman has any influence left within the committee there will be a rough battle before Gabrielson gets the prize. Scott has been in the midst of a

hitter controversy for months. He paid off his enemies today in his final report with counsel that the time has come for the GOP "to put away our toys and get to work.” He said the party was short of funds, shy of a proper platform and lacking vote appeal. He warned against "knaves In the deck" in a manner obviously pointing to some of the leaders of the movement to oust him. "A great Republican loader once founded the solemn warning that a house divided against itself cannot stand." he said. "It is dead true of the Republican party, my friens. We should be serving only the ends of the opposition if we continue quarreling among ourselves. if we indulge much longer in useless recriminations about conduct of Hie lust campaign.
