A duplicate of the city’s Three Rivers plant, the proposed new river filtration system will cost double what the original one did less than 20 years ago. The modern traffic lights have a lens for pedestrians and when it flickers on, the right-of-way is given to the person on foot. To remove the haxard at the Monroe and Second street crossing, a traffic signal of this nature should be installed. Traffic is heavy at this intersection and the pedestrian who starts across the street, frequently must dodge cars that make right hand turns. When plain Mr and Mrs. America walk across the intersection, they should not have to jump out of the way of automobiles. o o Checks to the county and city for the quarterly distribution of the state gasoline tax are a little higher than for the same quarter a year ago. a credit which the highway and street departments are sorely In need. The county has the most difficulty in making funds stretch for the upkeep of approximately 725 miles of roads, leaving very little for new construction. Illinois may have set an example in getting additional money for the latter purpose by inertaslng the gasoline tax one t cent a gallon, the proceeds to be used only for hard surfacing county highways and city streets. o o Flying Farmers: Today's modern farmer was evident as he winged his way to Decatur and with the ability of Uncle Sam's carrier fleet pilots or around-the world aviators, landed his plane at l.lnlger Field, west of the city. The visit of the Flying Farmers. probably 250 all told came from Hoosierland and surrounding states, to accept the hospitality of Decatur merchants and to inspect the Central Soya Com- ’ pany and Bag Service.
