July 25—(UPI— State officials, headed by Governor Schricker and former Gov. Ralph F. Gates participated in corner stone-laying ceremonies for the Northern Indiana hospital yester day. The cornerstone was put in place at the entrance of the main hospital administration building. Some 4.000 persons witnessed the ceremony. Schricker told the audience that Indiana's mental hospitals are overcrowded, caring for nearly 14,000 patients. He said the new hospital, consisting of 30 buildings and coating 122,000,000 probably would be the last of its kind to be built In Indiana. "Indiana cannot continue to give simply custodial care to mental path-nts. but must strive to treat and cure them." the governor said. He said this is an era of tran.ition "between the custodial care system and preventive psychiatry." The widow of Dr. Norman M Beatty, former director of the Indiana council for mental health, for whom the hospital will be named, also attended.

New Sweeping Grand Jury Probe Slated Gangster's Shooting May Bring New Probe Los Angeles. July 26—(UP)— The shooting of gangster Mickey Cohen may start the county grand jury on a new exhaustive Investiga tiun of links between the Loa Angeles underworld and law enforcement officers, jury foreman Harry A. Lawson said today. The jury was scheduled to return indictments thh week after a months-long Inquiry Into policeprotected vice, but Lawson said the Cohen shooting may open up'a new line of action. The investigation was started on a tip from Cohen himself that recordings existed of conversations between police officers and underworld characters. Cohen’s shooting was believed to be linked directly to the Inquiry. He was wounded, along with three companions, in a mysterious ambush Wednesday on the glamorous sunset strip bet we, n Los Angeles and Beverly Hills. The pudgy 35-year-old mobster hinted today that the underworld might "handle" the shooting in Its own way. He denied reports that he knew the gunmen who shot him. But he said that if he did know, he wouldn't tel) police any-1 way. “Hell." he exploded, "if I really knew the punks who did the shooting. I'd certainly have done something about It long before this." Meanwhile, sheriff's officers held Tony Brancato while seeking his pal. Anthony TrombUso.. for questioning In connection with Cohen's shooting. Both men are petty hoods from Kansas City. Trombino reneged on a promise to surrender Saturday because he "didn't want to spend the weekend in jail." He promised through his attorney to give himself up today 1 Anthony Messina, another sus-' pect. was released after brief questioning here. Three other sus-, pects were freed on bond in San Francisco. They were Jimmy Tarantino, publisher of a Hollywood j gossip magazine; Hy Porter, a reporter for Tarantino, and Joe Tenner, advertising salesman for the magazine Sheriff's officers also awaited the arrival of Ed Johnson. San Diego sporting goods dealer who sold the shotguns believed to have been used by the assailants. Officers hoped he could identify purchasers of the guns. Jury foreman Lawson indicated that his panel was ready to take off on a new Investigation of alleged tioups between police and the underworld in view of Mickey's shooting. "We’re very much Interested in this case" he said, "it might be considered our duty to investigate It.” He commented that sheriff Eugene Biscailuz' investigation "doesn't seem to be making much progress." • The jury Is scheduled to recess Thursday and Lawson said that might ore vent it from starting the new inquiry before Sept. 12 "unless someone wants to postpone the recess.” The jury reconvenes tomorrow to consider possible Indictments against law enforcement officers.
