| Comments on &s k ' I .aK'l I Lesson mM.r.jisgass3Bai*ir ll ’—J Creamed Comments on the Bunday School Lesson. Prayers of Confession, Psalm 32:1-5; 51:7-13, for Sunday, July 24. In our lesson today, the subject of sincere confession in an earnest prayer to God Is presented. V.l. "Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered" David, an outstanding Bible character, was guilty of the vilest sin in his lust for another man’s wife, of the betrayal of his place of authority, and the murder of the man whose wife he wanted. His sinfulness was revealed through Nathan who told him a story of the slaying by a rich man of a poor man’s lamb ending with the Words. "Thou art the man.” His confession was so sincere that he could declare happiness to one whose transgression was forgiven. V. 2. "Blessed is the man unto whom the Lord imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile." The thoroughness of God’s forgiveness is seen In that iniquity is not imputed and the smiting conscience is allayed. The word "Iniquity" means perverseness or a moral distortion of the sinner, hut derived means are wrong action, sin, crime, and even guilt contracted by sinning. Where there is overt sin there Is also a wrong inner nature that prompts the sin. V.l. “When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long.” David recounts his long effort in silencing his guilt of sin. and his conscience so smote him that he had a roaring sensation in thunder bolts of conviction. , V. 4. "For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me; my moisture is turned into the drought of summer." He acknowledged his sin as being against God, and this troubled him so much that his vitality was ebbing away. V. 5. "1 acknowledge my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have 1 not' hid I said I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin." Here is a noble and sincere confession fundamental to God's pardon. God pays little attention to soft-pedaling of sin God’s grace and pardon depend upon profound confession of sin. V.l. "Have mercy on me, 0 Qod,
Too often is heard a remark like this one. "These church people are just like the rest of us — just as careless about their word, just as quick to spread scandal, just as Indulgent In their appetites; in fact, they will do anything to keep up with the Joneses.” That picture mult be changed or else the Church is doomed. A transformed life fully surrendered to Christ makes such a difference that the finger of scorn will be turnel aside and a new conception of the work of God in the hearts of men will be recognized. Clericus Says: Clerical aaya; "A person who has * deep experience of sin. its couse luences with God's pardon. Is ant going forth to repeat programs that are sinful. according to thy loving kindness according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgression." “Be merciful to me • sinner" is the only prayer a sinner can offer effectively. Pardon jof sins must ever be an act of pure mercy of God, founded on the fact that while we were yet sinners God loved us. By God’s grace when sins are blotted out, the sinner is justified as If he had never sinned. V. 2. "Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin." In this verse God does more than merely pardon sin; he transforms the inner nature; the proclivities and Inclinations toward evil are subdued or eliminated. Otherwise, there would be a limit to God's grace, leaving man in a bad way to go in the same old way, V.7. "Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me and I shall be whiter than snow." Hyssop alone could, by the Levities! law. cleanse from contact with a corpse or from the defilement of leprosy. David realizes that his sin is of a nature that requires the most extreme measures. V.B. "Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice." David asks for more than simply peace and rest; he wants the active, thrilling joy which those experience who feel themselves restored to God's favor. V. 9. "Hide thy face from my sins, and blot all mine iniquities." One who sins can never be the same in his own estimation and in the estimation of those who knew him. Rut it is not what
others think or say about us when repented, but what God thinks and will remember against us no more that counts. ! V.lO. "Create in me a clean heart. O God. and renew a right spirit within ma." Here is reiterated the prayer for heart cleansing, changing the inner nature. Thia is such a vital experience that it is worth praying for repeatedly. Vs. 11,12. "Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not I thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold ine with the free spirit.” Full salvation brings joy and an assurance of living acceptably before God. V. 13. "Then will 1 teach transgressors thy ways; and ainners shall be converted." We are aavad to serve. One thoroughly converted wants that others have the same experience.
deep, pungent realization of the sinfulness of sin and of God's abhorrence of It. As long as a person regards sin as but a small matter, he will probably keep on sinning about as much ss be desiree. But such s person terribly deceives himself." LESSON PRAYER: Lesson prayer: How often we think of the past with its shortcomings and sin. We praise God tbst our record has been made acceptable to God by hia pardoning grace whereby he has blotted out the past. We pray that there msy continually take place within such transformation that will make the fountain of life clean and pure. Wash your own windows and see how much cleaner your neighbors' look. To have what we want is riches, to be able to do without le power. - First Mate Bob. “Live with the wolvee. and you'll learn to howl."
