Yankees Hand Bosox Double Defeat Monday New York. July 5 —(VP) - A* the red. white and blue bunting i came down today after the holiday hoopla, it was time to hang < black crepe - black, black crepe - on the pennant chancer of the Boston Red Sox The double drubbing absorbed by the hapless Sox at the hands of the New York Yankees seemed the clincher in the demise of this once proud and defiant contender The losses, by scores of 3 to 2 and 6 to 4. were the seventh and eighth in a row. and burrowed Boston 12 game* out of first place. The worst the team placed last season was 11>£ games hack, and then on June 1 when there was much more time to recuperate. But even more significant than the statistics was the sloppy and even bonehead appearance of the Red Sox. In the first game. Boston failed to score in the ninth on a hit with the bases loaded and one out. Johhny Fesky was on third at the time Al Z.arilla lined one to right field, an obvious hit and the fans roared But Fesky must have thought Cliff Mapes was going ito catch the ball, for he went back and tagged third before starting for home He was caught at the plate, depriving the Sox of a tying run The Red Sox genius in reverse carried into the second game TheBostons looked good when a three run rally in the third tied the score at 3-3 and a marker in the fourth gave them a 4-3 lead. But Joe Di Maggio, hitless until then, homered in the bottom half to tie the count and Boston reverted to form. In the seventh Phil Rizzuto singled for the Yanks and held first when Hank Bauer popped up. Then the Sox pulled the magnificent strategy of walking Di Maggio, putting the potentially winning run on second base Both Di Mag and Rizzuto advanced on lefty Mel Parnell's wild pitching, and Bill Johnson rapped them in with a single for the ball game. Vic Raschi won his 13th of the season in the opener for the Yanks. The Philadelphia Athletics remained four and a half games Icehind the leading Yanks by sweeping both ends of a doubleheader from Washington. 0 to 7. and 8 to 0. A six-run rally in the seventh won the opener, while Sam Chapman's two home runs highlighted the nightcap. Chapman's first fourbagger of the day was with bases full. Dale Mitchell was the big gun In Cleveland's twin triumphs over the Detroit Tigers. 3 to 2 and 7 to 3. He tripled home the winning run In the second game and wound up with a total of five RBl's fur the afternoon. The Brown's and the White Box split, Chicago taking the opener. 12 to 5, and St. bout* the second. 4 to 2. Brooklyn’s National league leader* made their advantage two full games by beating the Phillies twice. 7 to 1 and 8 to 4. while the a twin-bill with the Cubs. The chasing St. 1-ouis Cardinals split Cards won the opener, to 4. and then lost. 5 to 0. Preacher Roe won his seventh of the season in the first game for the Dodgers, and Don Newcombe his sixth In the nightcap Newcombe singled thrice in three tries but needed pitching relief from Jack Banta In the eighth The Boston Braves came from behind with four run* in the ninth to nip the Giants. 8 to 7. in the second game after losing the opener .1 to 4 Southpaw* cliff Chambers and Bill Werie pitched Pittsburgh to 2 to 1 and I to 0 wins over the Reds. — Yesterday's Bur — Dale Mitchell of Cleveland, who drove in five runs, got four bits and tripled home the winning second game run* in the Indian doubleheader sweep over Detroit

Decatur Moose Lose 13-lnning Thriller The Decatur Moose softball team lost a tough 1-0 decision in a 13inning thriller at Liberty Sunday night In an Eastern Indiana league encounter The Liberty team was held without a hit for the entire ball game by Scat Harrah, whose own error, the only one of the game by Decatur, allowed the winning run to score.
