DECATTTR DAH.Y DEMOCRAT, DECATUR, INDIANA
WAR DECLARED (Cont. From Page <»ne) Judge Fred J. Kullberg on Tuesday. Car'iold said he was determlnod to stamp out ail gambling. In and out of churches, and would lend his supiKirt wherever local authorities requested asslatance. Illinois law defines bingo a.-> gambling on n par with table-stakes poker and handbook horse betting. “All bingo, if played for prizes, is illegal and constitutes gambling,'* Canfield said. “They're all the same and 1 Wish they could be eliminated.” He invited persons who know of bingo games to tip his office so the games could be raided. “I don't know of any place where bingo Is lieirig played right now but I'm sure such places wouldn't be hard to finds." he said. "There must be a score of churches and ether organizations In the county that sponsor bingo games once a week or more often." Canfield said a large quantity of bingo equipment was seized in th< raid on St. Bridget's church and would be used ln_ prosecution of Gordon and his parishioners. The law* provides for a minimum fine of siou but no maximum if tried in county court. Justice of the peace courts are limited to a $lO6 fine. Canfield said mayor Larson pro- < ended with "great caution" before the raid and had conferred with Gordon, lay lead* rs and Bisnoji John J. Boyle of Rockford in an attempt to have the alleged games eliminated. A dozen raiders, led by (.arson and chief of police Roy Yyirk. said they found a bingo game in progress among 50 persons in th" church- basement when they burst Into the building. Officials said the raid was necessary to prevent a "double standard” on gambling in the conifnunity. Gordon, a youthful, handsome priest, denied that gambling was in progress at the church social. He said church officials merely were accepting contributions toward a proposed parochial schoid. Recoils High Corn On July 4, 1902 fMrk. Jim Halberstadt of Pleasant Mills recalls what she believes to be a record in the height ot corn for the Fourth of July. She reports that on that date in 19**2 the corn was so high that one was unable to see a horse and buggy coming at a crossroad*. She remembers the date distinctly, she »ays. because it was the first time she saw her husband-to-be with hi* brand new buggy. The corn may not be quite that high this year, but most farmers report that they are well pleased with this year's crop.
