Hint Merger Os Two Pro Net Leagues Chicago, July 1 — (UP) — A merger of the nation s two biggest profesaional banketball league* appeared Imminent today aa the rival Basketball Association of America and National Basketball League: l , scheduled meetings here. President Ike Duffey of the National Basket bail League indicated that executives of his loop will consider a tie-up. "It’s within the realm of possibility." he said. Another official of one of the leagues, who preferred to stay anonymous*. said merger plans were certain to come before the meeting of his circuit. The merger of the leagues, if voted. probably would end the strife which has riddled pro basketball since the BAA was organized three years ago. Neither has had exceptional financial success. I Alt year, four leading teams of the NBL bolted to Join the BAA, and the majority of teams in both leagues reportedly lost money in the last season. Top officials of both loops were here for the meeting. Maurice Podoloff, president of the BAA and Doxie Moore, commissioner of the NBL, were In the city. It was understood that all teams in both leagues which intended to May in pro basketball would agree to operate In a merged organisation. That could mean a 21-team circuit. There were reports that Washington, Providence and Indianapolis of the BAA and Denver, Dayton, Syracuse and Hammond of the NBL may withdraw from pro competition, however. Lease Fieldhouse Indianapolis, July 1 — (UP) — The National Basketball League had Butler University’s 15,000-seut fieldhouse all sewed up today, getting the Jump on the rival Basketball Association of America in their battle for hardwood fan suppott here. The NBL announced last night that it had leased the spacious gym for the home games of the Indianapolis Olympians, a team composed so far of five member of University of Kentucky’s great squad. Last year, the BAA’s Jets performed In the fieldhouse but many of the 15,000 seats were empty much of the time. The Jets were in financial straits today and doubtful starters at the NBL went all out to move back into this hotbed of basket ball. Leasing of the fieldhouse to the NBL for at least IS home games during 1*49-50 left the Jets temporarily homeless. But before the ink dried on the lease which will bring Butler "about 125,000," there were hints that the NBL and the BAA might become one before basketball weather returns.
