Gary Women Keep Up War On Crime Further Clean-up Os City Planned Gary. Ind . June 16 — (UP) Mrs. Margaret Griffith, a leader in the housewives’ campaign to clean up vice and crime In this lusty steel mill city, said today that "Gary women have just begun the fight.” After crime is under control, the women will turn their attention to the causes of crime, she said. "We are going to encourage slum clearance and proper recreational facilities. We will meet regularly to study and discuss these problems so that we can take effective action,” she said. The women's group, known as the Gary Women s Citizens committee plans to meet tonight to
map plans in furthering the dean-' up drive. They also will finish drafting the organizations constitution ami by-laws. Since the start of the drive, sparked by the murder of a popular school teacher in March, the women have moved authorities to clamp a lid on all of the town's once flourishing vice and gambling resorts. Crime, too, has been on the wane. Mrs. Griffith said that dur 1 ing the first part ot the year there ■ was a murder a week and that | purse snatching* wire rampant. | "Now it has quieted down com- j pared with what it used to be. Crime and vice still are not completely stamped out. though," she i said. The women's group grew out of a protest meeting March 6 after the murder of Mary Cheever, a school teacher, apparently by a purce-snateber. Eighteen women attended and voiced a demand for (tetter police protection. The following night. 1.500 womet met in a church auditorium and started the drive. biter some of the men tn town joined with their wives in forming a Gary crime commission, which now is discussing re-organi-zation of the police department with the mayor. Mrs. Griffith. 36. is typical of the women comprising the “petticoat army” that shattered Gary's well-organized vice and gambling interests. Her biggest ,‘ob. she says, is caring for her two small children. However, she ha- lontime in ■ the past to lie active it. YWCA and lied Cross work, and serve ns ■ an associate director of the Gary i symphony orchestra. At present, she doubles as a I utemb* r ot the board of directors! of the crime commission and a j member of the advisory board of i the women's group. The success of the housewlve’s effort* can best lie judged by therueful comment of one citizen: "There's not even a punchboard ! around anymore."
