ICommentSzMl k On S.S.«’®a Creamed Comments on the Sunday School Lesson, With Jesus in the Upper Room, Mark 14:12-25, for Sunday, May 22. This lesson records the early part of Thursday night of Jesus’ 1 last week and shows the transition from Old Testament rite of 1 the Passover to the New Testa- ! ment sacrament of the Lord's Sup- 1 per, ushering in a new covenant ’ with Christ as the world's Pass- 1 over. 1 V. 12. "And the first day of the unleavened bread, when they kill- ' ed the passover, his disciples 1 said unto him, Where wilt thou that we go and prepare that thou 1 inayest eat the passover.” The 1 passover mqmorial service was ' sacredly observed by the Jews, 1 keeping fresh in memory God's 1 deliverance from the Egyptians. ’ Jesu§ now stepped into this pic- 1 ture putting a new meaning to 1 real deliverance • deliverance from ! sin. ' V. 13. "And he sendeth forth two 1 of his disciples and saith unto 1 them, Go ye into the city, and there shall meet you a man carry- * ing a pitcher of water; follow 1 him.” Here is evidence of the su- • pernatural foresight of Jesus. Very i few men were water-carriers so 1 that it was easy to find the man * to whom Jesus referred. ’ V. 14. "And wheresoever he shall 1 go in, say ye to the good man of t the house, The Master saith, > Where is the guest chamber, where < I shall eat the passover with my 11 disciples?” The owner of the house I was evidently a friend of Jesus for t he was a good man. Then, too, < the owner of the house must have known Jesus since the word "Mas- t ter" was self-explanatory. Here 1 again the home was made sacred £ in that Jesus instituted the Lord's • Supper in a home. Well may we 1 write on the dining room wall, 1 "Jesus is present at our table.” ‘ V. 15. “And he will shaw you 1 a largo upper room furnished and 1 prepared; there make ready for « us.” This room was furnished with * table and couches and there would I be prepared the slain lamb, un- c leavened bread, and wine, togeth-i er with water for preparation.! These symbols were to be spirit-! i ualized. | f V. 16, "And his disciples went c If habitually you see the unlovely, the ignoble, the faults, the evil in the Dyes of others, you are endangering the stability of your own character. You become like what you feed upon. A safe practice is that of finding the good in others rather than dwelling only on their imperfections. When you detect failings in those about you, it is your responsibility to help them overcome them. But be sure that your own life is free from the flaws you see in others. LESSON PRAYER: Lesson prayer: We are so grateful that God so loved the world bat he gave his Son that whosoever would believe on him should , >e saved. We truly believe on lim and are happy to be accepted >s one of God's children. Grant I o give us grace and strength to I re ever faithful in tail things even ' unto the end. >

I forth, and came into the city, and found as he had said unto them; and they made ready the passover.” Here was perfect cooperation and harmony so fundamental on Christ’s program. V. 17. “And in the evening he cometh with the twelve.” This was a solemn march of the world’s greatest leaders save one, Judas, who was at heart a traitor whom Jesus did not turn out since he would absolve his relations himself. V.lB. “And as they sat and did eat, Jesus said, Verily I say unto . you, one of you which eaterti with me shall betray me.” By this showing of his knowledge of the coming treachery and yet declining to de- , nounce the traitor by name, he may have given Judas a last chance of repentance before the final act. — Pulftit commentary. V. 19. “And they began to be sorrowful, and to say to him one by one, Is it I? and another said, Is it I?" Jesus saw the wickedness in the heart of Judas which no one else saw. It is significant , that the same Lord sees what is in our hearts, though others see , it not and may think we are ( good when really we are bad. It is good for us to exercise self- j examination and say, too, "Is it j I?" Vs. 29,21. “And he answered and i 1 said unto them, It is one of the twelve that dippeth with me in the dish. The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him; but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had never been born.” Here is an unmistakeable allusion to future pun- 1 ishment. Judas had had the joy , of living, and only because of fu- j I ture retribution would it have been better for him (aside from the effects of his deeds on others) j not to have been born. V. 22. “And as they did eat, Jesus j took the bread, and blessed and ; brake it, and gave it to then) and said, Take, eat; this is my body.” ■ Here is one way that Jesus made manifest his presence and power* Let memory of the good things of our dearest friends be kept fresh - never forgetting the good things in their lives. We must never forget Jesus; hence, the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper by the use of bread and wine truly and properly 1 consecrated. I V. 23. “And they all drank of 1 it.” Christ knew that they all needed the atonement provided ■ for by the shed blood which that cup symbolized. I Clericus Says: Clericus says: “The meaning of the Lord's Supper may be found (1) in the commemorative aspect of it, bringing to mind the redemptive death of Christ, (2) in the expression of the communion with God under the new covenant, (3) in the communion of the disciples with one another, (4) in the promotion of the spirit of gratitude for redemption, and (5) in the realization of the anticipation of the completed redemption in the future 'till he come' ", . Book Review i What Will Social Security Mean to you? by B. H. Francis, American Institute for Economic Research, interprets and clarifies an intricate law and indicates how 1 it will affect employer, employee, ” and the general public. It also 1 points out the serious defects in 1 the Act which make important ® changes necessary in order to I avoid adverse effects. o II Trade in a Good Town — Decatur

The judge tested his understanding of the seriousness of the occasion by inquiring? “If you should promise to tell the truth, and then lie, what would happen to you?" The boy considered the matter for a moment and then replied solemnly, "I'd be thrown out of the cpb scouts." “Swear him in," said the judge. I
The Federal Council of Churches has been given a |IWO,OOO grant by the Rockefeller Foundation for a 3-year study of the application of Christian principles to economic life. A Christian high school, sponsored by 20 Protestant churches, will open in Spokane, Washington, next I fall, the director to be Supt. J. It is rumored here that soon only books related to the order of worship 1 for church services will be allowed to be published. Eyen catechisms and Sunday School materials will be forbidden. Ninety principles of Christian schools of East Ch|na have agreed that they should adjust themselves to Communism by any changes which are not against Christian teaching. Vocational training departments will be expanded. If the Communists nationalize education. eKorts will be made to hold school properties by converting them into churches, social centers, and theo logical schools.
