Eccentric Inventor Found Dead In Shop Apparently Victim Os Own Invention Glendale. Cal.. May 19—(UP)— Howard Bixby, wealthy eccentric inventor, apparently was shot to death by one of his own devices among the tiny ships that comprised his minicture radio-controlled “navy,” authorises said today. The 68-year-old retired engineer, member of a pioneer California family, was found dead yesterday in the elaborate workshop where he built what was considered one of the World’s inost extensive scale-model riavleS. He was shot in the head by a .38' caliber pistol with the handle removed as it for an experiment. The inventor's wife had left the house when their son, Howard, Jr., heard a shot. He went to the laboratory and found Bixby's body. A brother, Stafford Bixby, said he believed Bixby committed suicide because of a painful intestinal ailment. Police said the slaying probably was suicide or an accident, but a coroner’s investigation was ordered to inquire into the possibility of murder. Only four feet, eight inches tall, Bixby loved to dress up in a natty white yachting cap and uniform to conduct “fleet maneuvers" on a pool in his yard. Sometimes he would go to a lake for a “real battle.” The warships were designed to operate exactly like their fullsized prototypes. The prize model, a 10-foot, 450pound version of the USS California, would change course and fire .38 caliber blank salvos from the main battery at the turn of a switch. It had 24 guns and a speed of 15 miles an hour. Other ships could be started or stopped by slapping the hands, and some of the guns were exploded by whistling, radio signals or even dialing a telephone.
