" |Creamed aS ■■ 's; On I Lcsson c Aa%f| 1 I —— II I f '■ Creamed Comments on the Sunday School Lesson, The Clash with i- Religious Authority, Mark 11:27I- 33; Mark 12:28-35, tor Sunday, May 8. J This lesson deals particularly 8 with the replies of Jesus to an indignant committee sent by the' religious leaders to demand that he give an account of himself, L • and to an honest scribe who asked an honest question and received an honest answer. V. 27. “And they came again to Jesuralem; and as he was walking in the temple, there come to him the chief priests, and the scribe and the elders." The rulers were aware that Jesus' exercise of authority in cleansing the temple lowered their prestige and that ’ they were losing their power of s authority. Love of power in men . interferes with proper recognition of God to whom all men should be subject. V. 28. “And say unto him, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority to do these things?” In this verse is seen the real clash; it involved the issue of whether or not Jesus was the Son of God and as such was clothed with divine authority. V. 29. “And Jesus answered and said unto them. I will also ask you one question, and answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.” By asking this question Jesus avoided a premature declaration and put his enemies into confusion. Here is I a suggestion for all who have to I meet issues with enemies - so proceed as to confuse the critics and allow the truth to do its office work. V.3o' “The baptism of John, was it from heaven or of men? answer me." Was John the Baptist a real messenger sent from God, or was his work of origin only? This had a bearing on Jesus’ had introduced j4hC fsjhe greater than himself and able to perform divine, functions. If John spoke with authority then Jesus was speaking with authority. Vs. 31,32. "And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say From heaven, he will say, why then did ye not believe him? But if we shall say, Os men; they feared the people; for all men counted John, that he was a prophet indeed." The critics dared not answer either way, the reason, fundamentally being they wanted There is no sentiment so tender ( as that of mother. No memory is; more sacred than that of mother. From her we received our ideals. No one could understand us as she did. No one loved us as she did. No prayers lifted our soul like hers. No-kiss was so sweet as hers. We now know ,what she hoped we woald become, and in our failure to reach her goal for us we are filled with regret. Mother's Day serves to arouse that inward urge to rise to our full stature and not disappoint, her. Book Review The Seen and the Unseen, by Bertha Scher, the WilHam-Freder-

■ the applause of the people. V. 33. “And they answered and I said unto Jesus, We cannot tell. I And Jesus answering saith unto I them, Neither do I tell you by I what authority I do these things." [ Since silence gives consent, Jesus ' at once makes good his claim to divine authority and at the same li time put his critics in a position n of being non-plussed and defeated. V. 28. “And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reay soning together and perceiving that he had answered them well, ~ asked him, Which is the first t commandment of all?” Here ,was > a brilliant man who was capable . of all men to ensnare Jesus; he . started by drawing Jesus out in arguments. One never gets far in j religion by arguing, for religious , controversies lead to oppositions ! more and more marked. 3 Vs. 29,30,31. “.Ind Jesus answer- > ed him. The first of all the com- . mandments is, Hear. 0 Israel; the > Lord our God is one Lord, And t thou shalt love the Lord thy God f with all thy heart, and with all ! thy soul, and with all thy mind, ! and with all thy strength; this , is the first commandment. And the second is like unto this, namely, • this, Thou shalt love thy neighbor , as thyself. There is none other 5 commandment greater than these.” > Jesus spoke with authority and a I definite understanding that won [ the public approval. In these two i recognised commandments were I found in condensed form the ten commandments, the first one quotI ed above covering the first four, t and the last one (loving one’s neighbor) covering the last six . of the ten commandments. Here . was a final answer to the shrewd . question asked Jesus. In these two i commandments the love of God .I is especially stresesed. This is in the Christian re- , ligion. Heaven will not.be heaven Jif on this earth we have not J learned to love God supremely. Vs. 32,33. "A the scribe said . ‘ unto him, Well Master, thou hast J said the truth; for there is one [ God and there is none other than . he; and to love him with all > the heart, and with all the under- -! standing, and with all the soul t j end with all the strength, and .i to love his neighbor as himself, , i is more than all whole burnt of- . ferings' and sacrifice." Jesus won , a great victory in capturing the mind of this scribe and in securI \ ing his agreement. > V. 34. "And when Jesus saw that ,| he answered discreetly, he said ' unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man. i after that durst ask him any; • question. Jesus having captured I II his mind now sought to capture i. his heart, but in it all freedom I of the will was respected. ick Press, is written to enable those who hunger and thirst for more than bread to make use of the power of God, ever available to us, in our every day living. When , we live the ideal of our true self ;' for which we were created, God is with us. The Unseen becomes the Seen in our consciousness. The purpose of certain repetitions is to charge the subconscious mind. I Clericus Says: Clericus says: “To love God with all the heart involves a surrender of one's self into his hands with a thoroughness that includes the whole life. When we yield all the heart to him. holding nothing back, we can love him with all the heart; for he himself responds to our consecration with a-sense of his presence that inspires our love which brings satisfaction and joy?" *■■*-■“*-■mm,

h There is a close relation between mother and God. Jesus’ mother was the connecting link 5 between the human Christ and his father, God. Today it is mother that teaches • the child to know God and pray to Him. She is still the link connecting a child to God.
