Declare Business Will Be Improved Research Director Speaks To Alumni Bloomington, Ind., May 6—(UP) ' —Business is good but it is going so get much better, a research di--1 rector told the third annual alumni school of the Indiana University school of business today. Vergil D. Reed of the J. Walter Thompson Co., said increasing i population coupled with increased productivity because of more mechanization meant a bright future for business in 1960. “We will continue to multiply our energy with power and machines.” Red said, because "we still have far to go, particularly in agriculture.” He said the best opportunities for retailers and service business in the 1960’s would be in suburban areas. Reed said factories would continue to move from big cities and the population of both cities and farms would go to the suburbs of big cities. “Incomes will be higher and more evenly distributed,” said Reed. "More of the lower income groups will have climbed up into the middle class, but more of the upper income group will have climbed down into the middle class.” "Fewer but bigger farms” with a higher percentage of owner management was predicted. Reed forecast that machanization would move into the retail sales business, and that "well over 60 percent of all food sales will be made in self-service stores by 1960. "Vending machines will disgorge about $5,000,000,000 worth of goods per year compared to a tenth of that amount today."
