I Creamed ICommentSzMl B e On s,s.*«ra| Creamed Comments on the Sunday School Lesson, Jesus’ Perean Ministry, Mark 10:13-16; 10:35-40, for Sunday, April 10. Jesus steadfastly proceeded to his death taking time for teaching and healing in Perea, emphasizing the nature of his kingdom and the price to be paid for it. V. 13. "And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them; and the disciples rebuked them that brought them." Parents are to be commended for their seeking Jesus to bless their children. Jesus being the epitome of love was so lovable that children were drawn to him. The disciples’ misconception of the worth of children and their thoughtless misunderstanding of Jesus’ love for them led them to keep the children from annoying the Master. V. 14. "But when Jesus saw it he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little childten to come unzo me, and forbid them not; for of such is the kingdom of God." This is the Christian charter for childhood. To it the children of all races in all ages can appeal. Christ has promised them the best he has, and they | have a right to demand it in his: name. | , V. 15. “Verily 1 say unto you, I Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child,' he shall not enter therein." Every-! one who gets into the kingdom' must have certain qualities which the children possess • humility, truthfulness, and freedom from a spirit of duplicity. We as adults need the humble admission that we are nothing, that God is everything, and that we are powerless to do anything but cast ourselves upon his mercy. Larger provisions; need to be made for the children; to keep them in the kingdom as; saved members. Doing this would' save the world in one generation? V.lB. "And he took them up in; his arms, put his hands upon them and blessed them." Jesus outdid the desires of these parents who simply asked that he touch them;! he took them in his arms and put
OUR PREACHER BAYS A man of character is like a kite in that it flies only when held in restraint; if the .kite is given full liberty by cutting loose the line that holds it, it will fall and likely be crushed. Restraints of home keep the young from making a shipwreck of ife; the restraints of a moral society help a man go; right. The restraints of moral teaching as found in good books,: especially the Bible, bind a man) to right ways of living. The drawing power of God is a spiritual magnet producing life e'erual. Clericus Says: Clericus says: "Our lord's teaching can almost be reduced to this one declaration. Jesus promised men a new life if they i w-ould utterly relinquish the life they were living. The thing that; makes our lives unacceptable to him is not that they are necessarily marred by gross evil but that they are selfcentered. Give up self, said Jesus, and gain salvation ■ there is no other way."

■ his hands on them. He still longs to do that with every child. His I love goes beyopd the love of parI ents. f V. 35. "And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come unto him, saying. Master, we would that thou sbouldest do for us whatso- . ever we shall desire.” These sons j were selfish in wanting honor and position and they proceeded with strategy attempting to get Jesus’ assurance of their request before it was asked. They failed to accept Christ’s teaching that to be servant of all was to be great. 1 V. 36. “And he said upto them, What would ye that I should do ’ for you?” Jesus would bring their ' desires out in the open. It was not what they were about to say that counted so much as the rankling desire of their soul. As a man thinketh so is he. V. 37. "They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on the left hand, in thy glory." The request was such a one as typical ixjlitical job hunters might make. They were seeking to advance their personal interests through influence with Jesus rather than through their merit. The reason , Jesus can not reign more largely is found in so many today who , fail to exalt Christ and make first Christian service. V. 38 "But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask; can ye drink of the cup that I drink ; of; and the baptism that I am , baptized with?” They did not un- , derstand the spiritual nature of the kingdom not the sacrifices, the unconditional surrender to him, and ' the persecution that would likely . follow'. It takes time, patience, prayer, consecrated living to learn . the spiritual content of the kingdom of God. V. 39. "And they said unto him. We can. And Jesus said unto them, Ye shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of; and the baptism that I am baptized withal shall ye be baptized." Here is a pro- ; phecy regarding the future not ' understood by them. V. 40. “But to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not !mine to give; but it shall be giv- : en to them for whom it was prepared.” Preeminence in Christ's kingdom is not a matter of mere personal favor. It depends upon fit- | ness; even the Father will not grant favors arbitrarily.
