.8 ... fjl t g Comments#! Il on ? |a ... f Creamed Comments on the Suu- _ day School Lesson, Turning Toil ward the Cross, Mark 8:27-34; Luke 9:28-35, for Sunday, April o ■ V. The cross is the central theme for the next Quarter’s lessons. The study this week is the approach to the cross. V. 27. “And Jesus went out and his disciples, into the towns of Caesarea Philiptpi; and byway he asked his disciples, saying unto them, Whom do men say that ■ I am?” Jesus wanted his disciples , to know his true nature that 3 they might the better understand him and his work. So the direct question, "Whom do men say that ■ I am?" We do well to try to better understand. Jesus and his ' work today. V. 28. "And they answered, John the Baptist; but some say EJias, and others, One of the prophets.” These answers were mere guesses. Salvation must be something more than a guess. V. 29. “And he saith unto them. But whom say ye that I am? ' And Peter answereth and saith unto him, Thou art the Christ." The time had come when a fuller revelation of himself as the Messiah was necessary. There is no question of the fact of Jesus. The question is: Do we reaMy know him? Peter had the answer; Jesus was the promised Messiah, i the Christ. V. 30. "And charged them that t,hey should tell no man of him." There was the dangler of his enemies doing away with him before his mission was done. Later he told his enemies the truth. Matt. 26:63,64. V. 31. "And he began to teach I them that the Son of Man must j suffer many things, and be re-! jected of the elders, and the chief priests and scribes, and be killed, 'and after three days rise again.” It was as though Jesus had said to them, "You have declared that f am the Messiah; now I will show you what messiahshiip means. lAs an essential element it con- | tains death." In this respect Jesus differs from the founders of I all other religions. V. 32. “And he spake that say-! ing openly, And Peter took him and rebuked him.” Peter really assumed that he knew more abom the way to live right, and the plan of salvation, than Jesus actually teaches. V. 33. "But when he had turn-.' ed and looked on his disciples. Getting away from the seen into the unseen is your unlimited power. Select the thought you want in your outer manifestations, and that thought which you embody will be manifested in your outer world. If you do not want ill effects in your life, you cannot take poison into your stomach; so it is with negative thoughts. Like produces like. Your mind is your storehouse for good or ill. LESSON PRAYER: Lesson Prayer: We pray for a fuller revelation of Christ as Lord and Savior; we thank thee. 0 God. tor light enough to take the steps necessary to a fuller knowledge of Christ. he rebuked Peter, saying, Gel thee behind me Satan, for thot savourest not things that be of God, but the things that be of men.” The term Satan meani opposer in this case. In view ol Christ’s words, “He that is not for me is against me” (points . to all not for Jesus as opposers, . as was Peter. V. 34. "Whosoever will come 1 after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow , me." The key words here are himself and cross. It is self that . keeps Jesus out of the lives of men. Every trial, temptation, seiI fishness, or anything furnishing > a barrier to the Christian life, , must be borne to the mount of , pardon climaxing in the cross of ; Jesus. 1 V. 26. “And it came to pass : about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James and went up into a mountain to pray.” Jesus so often retired to the mountain to pray; as a result a great revelation was about to be made to the inner circle of three. Vs. 29,30,31. "And as he prayed the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering. And behold, there talked with two men, which were Moses and Elias; • who appeared in glory and spoke of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem." Here was further revelation of Jesus attested by two Old Testament characters whose presence brought the glory of God that shona with such illumination as to transfigure the three, all 1 seen by the three disciples as earthly witnesses. Here is just a little (picture of heaven prepared for God’s children. V. 33. "And It came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here; and let us make three tabernacles; one j for thee, and one for Moses, and jone for Elias:'not knowing what he said." Likely Peter felt the occasion was too blessed to be ended so quickly. Vs. 34,35. "While he thus spake, there -came a voice out of the cloud, saying. This is my beloved Son; hear him.” God said in plain language that there was nothing so important on the earth as his Son, his mission, the salvation he j was making possible for all men' 1 who would give heed to him. V. 51. "And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he steadfastly set his face to go up to Jerusalem." Jews was on his way to the cross and was being strengthened for his journey by his mountain top experience. we may pray so well as to have something of Christ’s transfiguration take place in our otvn lives. Book Review Notes on the Doctrine of God, by Carl H. Henry, the W. A. Wilde Co., is challesgingly presented for the university mind in quest of the Christian message for a secular age. The theme of the book insists that God is personal and self-revealing, an almighty Father, a God of Jove, a God supreme over all, yet vitally concerned in the events of lime. Dr Schweizer, after -his long sojourn in Africa, is visiting Europe she first time in 15 years, except for 2 weeks in 1939.
