New Contract Is Offered Printers Chicago Publishers Offer New Contract Chicago, March 11. — (UP) Striking AFL newspaper printers wjll vote on a new contract offered by Chicago publishers if the j proposal is approved by the contracts department of the Internaj tional union, officials said today. The contract proposal included a $lO weekly wage increase, $1 more than was offered previously by members of the Chicago Newspaper Publishers association. The offer was made in a letter I from association secretary John F. O'Keefe to John Pilch, president of local 16 of the international Typographical union. Pilch said the proposal would be scrutinized by the ITU's contracts department at Indianapolis. If the department approved it, he said, the offer would be submitted to a rank-and-file vote. Pilch said the contracts department would not consider the wage question which must be settled by members. He said a “tentative" agreement had been reached on other provisions which were not revealed. The proposed contract would run for 16 months. It would give day shift workers $99.50 for a hour week; night shift workers slOl for a 36-H hour week and third shift workers slOl for a 30hour week. The publishers presented it with the condition that it be submitted to the union membership for approval by secret ballot. O’Keefe said he jjfxpected” the printers to acceptVlhe offer. Noi further negotiations were scheduled. He agreed with Pilch that there was a “complete meeting of the minds" on all issues except wages, indicating that agreement had been reached on the involved issue of a closed shop, the original cause of the printers’ 15-month strike. The union had sought to maintain its traditional closed shop despite the Taft-Hartley law's ban. Recently it indicated it was willing to accept an agreement to restore the closed shop as soon as congress removes the ban. O’Keefe said the publishers considered their wage proposals “generous in the light of the general business picture, the levelling in the cost of living and the conditions which beset our industry in Chicago." ,The union struck in November, 1947, against the Daily News, SunTimes, Tribune, Herald-American, The Journal of Commerce and The Hammond, Ind., Tinies. The Sun and Times combined shortly after the strike started and the printers settled with the Hammond Times last month for a $12.50 raise. The papers have continued to publish throughout the strike by using methods that bypass the composing rooms where the strikers worked. It is estimated that the workers lost $9,454,000 in wages during the strike. Many have taken other jobs or left the city. The International union paid the strikers an estimated $7,000,000 in benefits. Experiments conducted at the American Museum of Natural History show, according to The American Magazine, that of all the creatures in the animal kingdom, the smartest apears to be the funloving chimpanzee.

College Dean Found ! Slain In Farm Home Nationwide Alert For Adopted Son Burleson, Tex., March 11 —(UP) —‘A nationwide alert was ordered today for the 19-year-old adopted son of Dr. John W. Lord. 70, dean of the Texas Christian university graduate school, who was found slain here yesterday. Johnson county sheriff Houston Walling said the youth, Arthur Hester. had not been seen here since Lord's body was found. [ District attorney John A. James, Jr., said Lord apparently was killled with a hatchet during a bitter [struggle at the lonely farm retreat he took for his home a month ago. Highway ‘patrolmen said Hester was last seen at El Paso, dressed ln>'a sailor's uniform and carrying a duffle bag. Officers believed he was headed for California with plans ‘for enlisting in the navy, from which he was discharged in 194 S after serving two years. Lord and his wife adopted Hester from an orphanage in 1941. Mrs. Lord died five years ago. Lord and Hester moved to the 50-year-old farmhouse five miles of here in January. The section is remote and heavilywooded. Burleson is about 20 miles from TCU campus at Fort Worth. When Lord failed to make his classes on Wednesday and Thursday. two TCU students were sent to investigate. They found his battered body lying in a bedroom at the rear of the house. In another bedroom, deputies found a bloodspattered magazine opened to an article entitled: “Wanton women, an open road to murder." The‘professor's car. a recent model, -was missing.
