March 9—(UP) —A murder warrant was served i today on Joseph Matusik. 44, whoi I set up a recording system to get I proof of his wife's suspected in- j j fidelity, but got a recording of how . he killed her and attempted suicide. Matusik. police said, apparently i suffered from hallucinations that' his wife was being wooed by a' secret lover whom he accused of trying to poison his coffee. He named her “lover'' as a tenant who had lived upstairs un- < stairs until recently. To prove his charges, he installed an elaborate recording system throughout the house. He told his wife. Eve, 40. about the recorder but kept thej location of the microphones secret. ‘ Monday evening, he took his wife to the basement to prove she had been unfaithful by letting her hear a playback of the recordings. The machine was turned on at the time. Before starting the playback, however, Matusik snatched up a pistol and shot her to death. The shots were not recorded because Matusik did not have microphones in the basement. As he ran up the stairs, however, microphones in other parts of the house picked up his words. When police turned the recorder on, they heard Matusik's voice: "I can't stand it any longer. It's (he second time the lines have been tampered with. There's a bunch of ghouls walking on me. They were here either Saturday night, last night or this afternoon. “The door was open again. The bullets were removed from the gun Please, dear God. I had no Intention of doing this. I only wanted the gum for. protection against these ti!fse J e'h people." Then the device recorded the voice of his daughter. Cecelia, 14. as she called police frantically while her father went to a bathroom and slashed his wrists. Cecelia had witnessed the slaying "Hurry!" she gasped. "There's been a murder." A son. Robert. 17. tried to stop the bleeding of his father's wrists. Two other children. Monica. 8. and Bessie. 7. were in bed. reading comic books, not knowing of the tragedy Mutusik resisted police because “I know I'm going and you can't help me—l'd get the electric chair anyway." Attendants at a hospital said he would recover. Doubt Russia Able To Attack U. S. j Doubt Wherewithal To Attack Nation •' Washington. March 9— (UP)— . j Hop American military strategists ]i are convinced that Russia does not . | have what it takes to attack con- . j (inental United States by air or ( I sea. it was learned today. In fact, a high military authority ■ said. Russia is not considered cap- | able at the present time of carrying out anywhere in the world I “large-scale amphibious operations ' comparable to those of the allies ■ during World War II." Consequently. U. S. military leadj ers are basing their strategical plans on the premise that if Rus- ! sia moves militarily, she will do so I on land. This could include attacks i or military expansion in western Europe, Scandinavia, the middle east and the far east. 1 This estimate of Russia's milij tary limitations has led the joint j chiefs of staff to decide against setting up now in continental United States a unified command or I commands like those in outside I areas. However, Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower may review this decision j during his temporary duty as ! chairman of the joint chiefs of I staff and chief military adviser to ; President Truman. Mr. Trumnn has asked congress to authorize a permanent head of the joint chiefs to tighten unifica- ' tlon and to end backstage bicker- . ing among the armed forces. Such a post, some military leaders contend, would be close to that of a commander-in-chief of all the nation's armed forces. One unified command or a number of regional unified commands for continental United States could follow. All American armed forces out-l side continental United States are grouped under six theater com-! mands. They are the Alaskan. Atlantic. Caribbean. European. Far Eastern and Pacific. Continental United States now is divided into an undisclosed number of defense tones. Local commanders of the three armed forces work together in Joint operations centers. No provision has been made for automatic unification -of command in event of attack. But the joint chiefs of staff have authority to set up unified commands “in the interest of national security . . . and ... as may be necessary." HUNDREDS ARE (Cotit. I One man refused to leave his home but later sat on its roof and fired a shotgun to call rescuers who removed him by boat. Re idents at Cretfr were warned 'o boil their drinking water when the sewage plant was flooded. At Fremont, Neb., a Id-inch gas main exploded, apparen'ly after being undermined by the Platte river. The pressure of the escaping gas broke a high tension wire overhead and a spark touched off >he blast. No one was hurt. At Kansas City, river forecaster Ralph Aldrich warned that an ice jam at Biair. Neb., had raised tlie Missouri river to three feet below flood. He said there was a "terrific differen'ial" ‘ between that point and Omaha where the river was 11 feet below flood.
