Bloomington Is Favored In Own Semi-Final Indianapolis, March 8- lUPI--On paper, at least, Bloomington should rule as favorite in Satur day's southernmost Indiana high school baskethall tourney semi finals at Indiana University's field house. But records are tossed in the waste paper basket when such as Bloomington. Bedford. Jasper and Evansville Central fight over the right to represent that district in the Jour-team finals in Indianapolis March 19. Bloomington licked all three of its semi-final foes during the past campaign. It whipped Jasper in its second game of the season. 47 to 37; trounced Evansville Central. 42 to 36. and came home from Bedford with a 43 to-36 victory just before the sectionals began. That game with Evansville the only one of the four 1948 finalists to survive the reglonals -may have been different had the Golden Bears been at full strength. Their big guns were benched that week by coach Walter Higgs because of "training violations." All four had a fairly rugged time before getting into the "sweet six teen." Bloomington, which won its first and only state crown in 1919 had a close battle with Terre Haute State in last Saturdays' regional finals. Bedford upended Jefferson ville and then nipped Paoli l:y four points; Jasper and Evansville Cen ) tral had to come from behind to beat Monroe City and Dale, respectively. Jasper reached the "big four" only once in 1934 -and lost to Logansport's eventual state champs in the afternoon.3l to 28. Bedford went to the "charmed circle" six times before being stopped, and Evansville* made it four times and was runner-up to Lafayette Jeff last year. Jasper's Wildcats, a perennial tourney power but never a champion in the 39-year history of the Hoosier schoolboy hardwood show, meet Bedford in the Bloomington opener Saturday afternoon. Cabby O'Neill's Jasperites, who can throw either a zone or a man-to-man defense against the opposition, beat Bedford early in the season, 52 to 41. O’Neill has a rugged, although not too tall club Junior center

I, MJbV.-Ul.ll) Illinois Wins Title Despite Michigan Loss e Chicago. March S — (UP) — The big nine champion Illinois basketball team looked forward today toward redemption in the NCAA cage tourney after-a dismal end to its conference competition, a shatter- ; ing 70 to 53 loss to the third place i Michigan Wolverines. Both competing teams in the final game of big nine play for the I season set a record. The lllini s 53 points raised their total for the season to 783 in conference play, an average of 65.25 per game, which smashed the previous mark of 755. or 62.9 per game, set in 1943 by the Illinois whiz kids. Michigan's mark was strictlv a campus affair, the 70 points piled in by the Wolverines were the most any Michigan team ever scor- . ed in a league contest. Perhaps Illinois was over-confi-dent going into the game, or perhaps the lllini wanted to rest before the tough NCAA competiticn begins. But Michigan, inspired to | the heights, had little trouble with j the titleholders. The Wolverines held a small mar--1 gin most of the first half. Illinois tied the score at 15 to 15, and then went ahead. 18 to 17. but the Wolverines zone defense stifled the high scoring visitors from that point on, and the Michigan forwards were adept at dropping bask ets. Michigan led at the half. 32 to 27. and increased the lead the rest lof the way, one time holding a 20 I point edge. ' The Wolverines' Mack -Suprunoi wicz paced the scorers with IS 1 points, not quite efirngh t;> move him into second place behind Don Rehfeldt of Wisconsin in the lea--gue individual scoring race. He finished the season with 178. behind] Refeldt's 229 and the 182 of Jim Mclntyre of Minnesota. Fred Green, Illinois center, led his team with 15 counters, but Dwight Eddleman connected for 10 to lift himself into the top 10 scorers of the league for the first time this season. The clash completed league cage play, except for the title holders. Illinois Sunday, as big nine champions, accepted the fourth district bid to the national collegiate athletic association tournament and will play, in the eastern regional [LOANS] S2O to S3OO QUICKLY AND PRIVATELY MADE qualify- Liberal terms— Beady cash—l o apply—Call or phone "Details without obligation" LOCAL LOAN Dependable COMPANY Incorporated Brock Store Building—Ground Floor Docatur, Indiana Phono 2*3-7 Loans arranged in nearby towns arid vicinity J ■ Shuffleboard State Champion Girls’ Team Fort Wayne vs The Undefeated RIVERVIEW TEAM Wednesday Night 8:00 P.
