Randolph County Quintet Downs Lancaster In Final; Jackets Lose In Opener

Jefferson To Ploy New Castle Trojans In Semi-Final At Muncie Saturday Little Jefferson of Randolph county (enrollment 50, and no home gym), copped the Huntington regional championship Saturday night, defeating the Lancaster Central Bobcats, 36-34, in a hard fought final battle. Jefferson won its way to the finals by defeating Huntington Catholic, 41-35, in the second tilt Saturday afternoon, after Lancaster eliminated the Decatur Yellow Jackets, 53-41, in the tourney opener. Jefferson, by its regional title, will compete in the Muncie semifinal Saturday, meeting Ne w Castle, surprise winner at Muncie, in the second game, after the Auburn Red Devils and the Kokomo Wildcats open the semi-final meet at 1 p.m. The'afternoon winners tangle at 8:15 p.m. for the right to participate in the final tourney at the Butler field house at Indianapolis Saturday, March 19. Close Final Battle The regional final was close, hard fought struggle all the way. Lancaster held a 7-4 edge at the end of the first quarter, but the Jefferson Red Devils pulled into a 13-13 tie at the half. The Wells county sectional champs moved into a 22-21 advantage at the close of the third period but Jefferson, after a bitter final eight minutes of play, emerged on top by the, narrow two-point margin for the championship. The fine play of Bill Anderson and Jim Harris paced the Red Devils to their victory. Harris counted 12 points and Anderson 10 in the final triumph. Lancaster's scoring was well divided, Dave Paxson and Bob Worden each counting points. Five men bore the load for Jefferson throughout, the Red Devils playing the entire afternoon game without a substitution, and using one reserve in the final, only when Harris was benched for a time with four fouls and in the closing minutes when Harris fouled out. Jackets Eliminated Decatur’s Yellow Jackets, far below the form which carried them to their sectional championship the previous weekend, were knocked from the running in the tourney lid-lifter by the decisive 53-41 defeat at the hands of Lancaster. The Bobcats, catching the Decatur defense napping time after time for easy under the basket shots on fast breaks, raced into a 13-4 lead at the first quarter, and boosted their margin to 28-12 at the main intermission. The Wells county team maintained this 16point edge at the close of the third period, 41-25. Only in the final period did the Jackets show any real punch and

I drive, but their final burst only I succeeded in cutting Lancaster's final margin to 12 points. Inability of Harold Bohnke, regular forward, to play more than a few minutes, because of the flu from which he suffered all week, cost the Jackets immeasurably, particularly on rebounds. Kenny Grant wtts Decatur’s top scorer with 10 points, followed by Vic Strickler with eight. Dave Paxson was outstanding for Lancaster with 19 points. Ramblers Ousted A third-quarter burst, in which they scored 14 points tB only five for their opponents, carried Jefferson to its 41-35 victory over the Huntington Catholic Ramblers. The Red Devils held an 8-4 edge at the end of the. first quarter but the Ramblers fought back to a Illi tie at the half. Jefferson’s thirdperiod splurge gave the eventual champions a 28-19 lead* and they were well in front throughout the final eight minutes of play. Jefferson won this ball game from the foul line, converting 13 of 24 chances, while Huntington made only three of 10, missing their first seven attempts. Jim Harris tallied 20 points to lead Jefferson, while only the fine floor play and shooting of Larry Godfrey, who also scored 20 points, kept the Ramblers in the running. WOLWL r^^wwt - 1 ■ wii?".fe>. _«< X; Al 4 ■''l/ Tough Luck, Jackets! —oOo— Decatur’s Yellow Jackets simply didn't have it Saturday in their regional test, and as a result fell easy victims »to an alert band of Bobcats from Lancaster Central. The Decatur boys failed to show the game they displayed in rolling to the sectional title and failed to offer the Wells county boys much opposition. Illness of Harold Bohnke. big Yellow Jacket forward, also hurt plenty. 11l nearly all week with the flu, Bohnke was able to play only a few minutes. —oOo— Congratulations are in order for the Iron men of Jefferson township, Randolph county, who well earned their regional triumph Saturday. The Red Devils played through the entire afternoon game without a substitution and used only one reserve in the final battle, this sub spelling a player with four personals briefly and re-enter-ing the game when this same man was ousted on fouls. —oOo— Two boys in particular stood head and shoulders above the others in the regional games. These boys, both small, were Bill Anderson of the Jefferson champions, and Larry Godfrey, hot shot of the Huntington Catholic Ramblers., Anderson sparked the champs to both their victories, while Godfrey single-handedly kept the Ramblers in the ball game all the way. • A wave of upsets marked reg ional play throughout the state. Biggest surprise was the elimination of Muncie Central, picked by] many as a favorite for the state i crown. The Bearcats went for 13 i minutes without a field goal as they were oust°d by New Castle in the final of the Muncie regional. Other upsets included the elimination of Indianapolis Tech. Jeffer - sonville and Peru as major victims. The Auburn Red Devils came through with flying colors at Fort Wayne, downing the Fort Wayne Central Tigers in a great final game, 51-47. The Huntington Herald-Press, in picking all-regional teams, named Kenny Grant, Decatur guard, on the second team. The first team members are Jim Harris. Dick Sipe and Bill Anderson, all of Jefferson; Dave Paxsop of Lancaster and Larry Godfrey of Huntington Catholic. An excellent selection, we would say. Other members of the second team, in addition to Grant, are Merrill Whitenack of Jefferson, and Bob Worden, Doyle Stern and Don Yager, all of Lan caster —oOo— With their elimination from tourney play Saturday, eight it the,Yellow Jackets' It certified player* concluded basketball play

However, Coach Worthman has an excellent nucleus around which to build next year’s team in Harold Bohnke, ■George Bair, Vic Strickler and Jerry Gehrig. —oOo — With Adams county’s last high school team out of the running, it is time for BASKETBAWL to call it quite for the seaccn. 16 learns In Running For Slate Crown Indianapolis, March 7 — (UP) — With many favorites ousted, 16 regional survivors prepared today for next Saturday’s Indiana high school semi-final basketball tourney battles and the ultimate crowning of a successor to Lafayette Jefferson March 19. Who that 1949 state champ might be may be easier to determine after this week’s games. .Every one of the four semi-final tourney sites paektgl plenty of power. In all but one cemer — Muncie — at least two of last year’s semi■finalists will be back. Three — Jasper, Bloomington and Evansville Central, the last 194$ finalist still in the tourney — qualified for the Bloomington session. Lawrenceburg and Madison, traditional arch-rivals from the south eastern conference, will be back al the Butler fieldhouse, and Hammond and South Bend Central earned their meal tickets again to the Lafayette meet. Only at Muncie, where the Bearcats of that city were upended by New Castle, none of last year's "sweet sixteen" members managed to repeat. Lafayette Jeff's defending state, champs ran aground against Frankfort’s vaunted zone defense Saturday afternoon. 52 to 36. three major regional casualties. Jeffs Red Devils, who mowed down mighty New Albany in the sectionals, were upset by Bedford, 49 to 41, with sophomore Ned Boyer directing the Stonecutters' attack. IMuncie couldn’t hit from the floor for the first 13 minutes and then staged a valiant “too little too late” rally, but New Castle won, 30 to 28. Tech also failed to find the range and lost to little Summitville, 49 to 42. The Goiblins, who last week won their first sectional crown in 23 years, went on to swamp Fortville, 61 to 41, before a full house of 15,000 at Butler. Two other “people’s choice" clubs also came through, but Fairland s previously undefeated Hornets and Concord Twp. and Zionsville, both beaten only once, went down fighting. Fairland, which ousted Greensburg in the afternoon, 52 to 46, met its match in Madison, 56 to 37. Concord's minutemen gave South Bend Central a rough time before giving in, 46 to 40. Central swamiped Rochester for the crown, 52 to 26. Zionsville lost a touch-and-go .battle tc Frankfort at night. 40 to 38. Brookston and Jefferson joined Summitville in the "peoples choice" class. Once-beaten Brookston, which took out favored Peru, 49 to 47 despite 'Earl Karowsky’s 24 points
