Gunman Sought for Slaying Os Teacher Gary, Ind., March 4 — (UP) — A negro gunman was sought today for the fatal shooting of Mary Cheever. 44-year-old high school teacher, in an alley behind her home late last night. Officials said the victim’s purse was missing, and that robbery was the probable motive. Mrs. Herman Gotti, a neighbor, called police after she heard Miss Cheever scream and saw a negro dragging her through the alley by her hair. She then hear a shot and saw the man running away. dairyman, by use of proven sires. In 1947 there were fewer than 10,000 cows in Indiana bred artificially and the total number this year is expected to reach 50,000. It has been estimated by the dairy extension workers at Purdue that artificial breeding will increase the income mpre than $1,000,000 for the farmers in the next two years. G. A. Williams, Purdue extension dairyman, will be with the exhibit when the caravan is in Adams county, and will answer questions about artificial breeding. The exhibit includes a picture of proven bulls with the records of their daughters. These are some of the bulls which make it possible for the smallest breeder to increase his butterfat production. According to L. E. Archbold, Adams county agricultural agent, there will be eight exhibits from the local dairy industry. The local dairy committee which is responsible for the exhibits is composed of Charles Abraham, Ben Mazelin, Ben Gerke, Charles Backhaus, Wm. GriYifths, Louis Schuller. Fred | Kunkle, and Mrs. E. W. Busche and her home ecomonics council. • Other Purdue displays in the caravan are: "Control of cattie grubs" by three methods, spraying. : washing and dusting: "Farm safy ty," a guide to prevent dairy accidents ajid injuries: “Methods of curing hay." a comparison of the different curing methods to prevent heavy loss of its nutritive value; "Ladino,” a demonstration of seeding and management and its value in pastures; “Herd health." a demonstration of "why cows leave home" or why Indiana dairymen are forced to raise 60 percent more heifers for replacements under existing conditions than is . actually necessary, and "Home i pasteurisation," a demonstration showing how to pasteurize milk. > I- ■ » ■ ■ ■ WEEK END SHIHS! Richard Meeks Is Held Legally Sane Wanted Here For Fraudulent Check Richard Meeks, 21, who was indicted by the Mercer county, 0., grand jury for issuing fraudulent checks, has been ruled "legally sane and responsible for his conduct." He had been under observation since February 2 at the Lima, 0., state hospital. R. E. Bushong, hospital superintendent, made the sanity ruling in a letter to the court. An affidavit is on file here for the arrest of Meeks, who allegedly passed a worthless check for $48.95 at Linn’s clothing store last November 12. He is also charged with defrauding an innkeeper. He is said to have slipped away from the Rice hotel here without paying his bill, then attempting to cash a check at the nearby newsstand, where he was balked. He was able to purchase a suit at the clotihng store for the fraudulent check, then took a taxi to Celina, his home town. He is said to have paid the Decatur taxi driver with money he borrowed from a Celina taxi driver. Meeks subsequently issued two more worthless checks in Celina, for wihch he was arrested by Mercer county sheriff Dwight Raudebush. He was transferred to the Lima institution at the request of his attorney. Henry J. Knapke. Common pleas judge Paul P. Dull withheld sentence pending the sanity verdict. He was to be returned to Mercer county today. UNEMPLOYMENT (Cont. From Page One) 1 this year as compared to last year. Farm employment ran counter to the national trend last month and showed a seasonal increase from January’s figure of 6,763,000 to 6,993,000. In his review yesterday of the economic situation, Mr. Truman said government regulation of installment buying is a commonsense way to stabilize the national economy. The federal reserve board has directed that effective Monday, buyers of automobiles and 11 other classes of durable items Will have 21 months to pay for their purchases instead of the present 15 to IS months. It was the board's first relaxa.tion of its buying curbs since consumer credit controls were re-im posed last September. Mr. Truman noted that the reserve hoard acted only after consultation with his council of economic advisers, the joint congressional economic committee and the White House.
