Hoosiers and others in these midwestern states are hopeful that winter’s worst blasts were those spread west of the mountain range. Mitchum, the marijuana Romeo, was bored with life and wanted to break the monotony. He’s doing it by scrubbing jail floors. When George Washington owned Mount Vernon he had an estate of 8,000 acres. Today, only the Texas cattle kings can boast of such extensive holdings, and probably none will ever be elected president. —o o The legislature’s job still is the passing of a tax bill to raise the money to pay the soldiers’ bonus. The Republican senate and the Democrat house must get together; on a method and set the machinery in motion. Postponement will not solve the problem. O In the government-controlled press of Hungary the trial and conviction of Cardinal Mindszenty. were hailed as a triumph of the: government over “international j imperialists.” It is to the point ! to observe that in the courtroom ' it is more fitting that juslce should triumph. ——o o— — Vice-President Barkley has had good training for his job. Having been a senator for many years, hel should be immune against sena-' torial oratory and able to sit through the longest filibuster. The average man, plunged into such a job, would soon be counting the days to the end of his four-year term. o o What should a town of 1.500 population do with a bequest of $1,400,000? Perryopolis, Pa.. 30 miles south of Pittsburgh, has received such a bequest from a former resident. The town has come to an extraordinarily sensible conclusion. It has hired a planning expert, to survey the town’s economic. geographic and geologic status, and recommend the form of government development best fitted to its needs. By that time the community's needs may be clearer.

The grain market may be rigged, thus causing the fluctuations in price. The government is attempting to bolster the market by heavy purchases of grain for oversea commitments and the flurry is expected to calm down. Experts say there is no reason for a decided break, for world demand is heavier than any contemplated surplus. o o Like this newspaper, the JournalGazette also thinks that more boys should he enjoying scouting. It comments: “Northeastern Indiana would profit greatly in the finer things of life if it had twice or three times the number of Boy Scouts it has at present. The youngsters are eager to join. The limitations are imposed by lack of qualified volunteer leaders." A German denazification court has just let out of jail Franz von Papen, Hitler’s man-of-albwork in foreign affairs. Freed of the charge of war crimes at the Nuremberg trials, von Papen was convicted by a German court, and sentenced to eight years in prison plus the loss of his property. He is forbidden to take any part in politics, even to express his opinions publicly. At 69 Von Papen’s power for evil should be reduced. The less the world hears from him, the better. o o Lincoln's Trials: Calvin Coolidge was talking about Lincoln, and the fact that from the White House he could see the camp fires of the Confederate army. “Compared with him,” said President Coolidge, "no presi dent has had anything that could be called trouble." There must have been many moments when Lincoln, reflecting on the fact that the nation was split in two and at times the prospect of reunion seemed hopeless, must have despaired. Yet he never showed it, always pulled himself together. Perhaps the key to this was given in these lines of his First Inaugural Address: “Why should there not be a patient confidence in the ultimate justice of the people? Is there any better or equal hope in the world?" In later times of stress many Americans must have wondered what Lincoln would have done, and wished for his hand at the helm Though Lincoln has not been present in the flesh at our times of crisis, he has been there in spirit. The memory of his trials and of his triumph must have heartened many a later president when the future seemed dark. It must be an inspiration now for President Truman.
