few teller System For License Plales Letters Identify License Branches Indianapolis, Feb. 3—(UP)— All Hoosiers will have'low license numbers on their autos next year but Ifetters of the alphabet will be added to the numbers. Secretary of state Charles F. Fleming anuounced today how the new lettering system would work beginning in 1950, including the letter combinations assigned to each county. The letters will identify the license branch from lyhich the plates were issued. There will be no number bigger than 9,999. If there are more than 9,999 automobiles in one county, that county gets more than one combination of letters. For instance, Marion county— Indiana’s biggest and most populous — was assigned the letter combination “AA.” But that combination could be used on only 9,999 plates. There are more cars than that in Marion county, so other letter combinations are needed. Marion county therefore will have some plates lettered “AA,” others lettered “AB,” “AC,” “AD,” etc. Fleming said state police would carry copies of the code so they could tell in a hurry where a certain car hails from. “We also hope this will help us catch all the unassessed autos in the state,’.’ said Fleming.” “Some people estimate that owners of 532,000 cars are escaping payment of property taxes because of the present licensing system.” In conjunction with the new sysem. Sen. Roy Conrad. R., Monticello, yesterday introduced a bill in the legislature which would re quire car owners to buy their plates in the county in- which they live. The only exceptions were bus owners, governmental agencies, auto dealers, legislators, and elected state officials, who procure their plates at the motor«vehicle bureau in the state house.
