Commodores Lose To Monroeville Cubk
Allen County Team Downs Commodores The Monroeville Cubs, playing before a near capacity crowd at the Decatur high school gym, turned loose their power in the second half Wednesday night to defeat the Decatur Commodores, 58-26. It marked the 17th victory of the season for the undefeated Cubs, who startled the state basketball world last year by winning the Fort Wayne sectional and regional tournament. The Commodores gave the champion Cubs a great battle throughout the first half but the greatly superior height and weight of Mon roeville told heavily on the much smaller Decatur quintet in the final two periods, particularly the last quarter, when the Cubs ran wild. Both teams played cautiously throughout the first period, with ' Monroeville holding a 4-3 lead at the close of the quarter. The Cubs j then quickly ran up a 10 3 margin but Jim Meyer hit a pair of field goals and Bill Gillig one to brine the Commodores wi hit) a single point at 10-9. Abner Lee ami : Johnny Kable traded fielders but Bearman connected for a field goal : and a free throw to give Monroe ville a 15 11 advantage at the half The Cubs began to make their superiority evident in the third J quarter, holding the Commodores 1 to five points while scoring 1! to hold a 29 1(1 third-period lead. The tiring Decatur lads could not keep up the pace in the closing minutes, with the Cubs scoring almost at will, and from all angles to turn a pretty good ball gaminto a rout. New Albany Takes Lead Os Prep Quintets Indianapolis. Jan. 27 — (UP)— New Albany's twice-beaten high school basketball team today ruled as the mythical Indiana prep “king’’ as its Bulldogs took over No. 1 spot in the seventh weekly United Press rankings. Coach Gordon Raney.'s tall and rugged crew, typical of southern conference basketball, climbed the ladder to the top the hard way. It didn't break into the “big ten" until the fifth week of the poll, mostly because of losses to Evansville Central and Madison. But after surviving a flu epidem ic and injuries, the Dogs climbed slowly into the thick of the battle beginning next month for the state championship. Their display of power and knowhow against Jeffersonville last Friday convinced the experts that Now Albany had lost none of its strength which stamped it a favorite to win last year's state tourney. Anderson’s Indians, who were in the lofty top spot for five weeks, skidded to second place as the re suit of their 52 to 46 loss to Muncie Central, while Jeffersonville, beat en by both New Albany and Anderson last weekend, was third. Outside of that reshuffle, the only major change was Hammond's disappearance from the elite. Bob King's Wildcats, beaten in their last three outings in the western division of the northern conference, were replaced by Muncie Central, which is slowly rounding into tour ney form.
Two of the "big ten ’ were in ac tion last night and both triumphed Monroeville stretched its string 0: victories without defeat to 17 at the expense of Decatur Catholic. 58 to 26. and Brazil's Red Devils made it 13-1 by threshing Southport. 46 to 36. Elsewhere last night, Peru smacked Logansport, 44 to 38; Elwood edged Kokomo, 38 to 37; Marion nicked Wabash, 42 to 40. New Albany. Anderson, Muncie Central. Madison and Frankfort figure in the top games on this weekend’s card. New Albany hosts Madison Friday in an effort to get even forth three-point loss it suffered in its own holiday tourney final. Two more “big ten" members clash when Anderson goes to Frankfort, while Muncie, 53 to 44 winner over Hartford City Tuesday night, invades Indianapolis Tech witli hopes of keeping its north central conference title hopes alive. Outcome of tonight's South Bend Central ■ Mishawaka game may de termine the winter m the eastern division NIHSC title race Central’s Bears have won six in a row without a miss in the conference. Mishawaka was upset by La Porte last week. The Slicers, who won the title last year, are currently tied witli Mishawaka with five victories against one defeat. The seventh weekly U.
