tute said. "On this tremendous volume of sales the companies earned less than half as many dollars in 1948 as they did on the lower volume in 1947. The earnings in 1945 approximated 71/100 of a cent per dollar, against 1.49 cents per dollar in 1947.” The meat institute reported recently that wholesale prices had dropped 20 percent since mid-Sep-tember peaks. This figure paralleled the Dun and Bradstreet report of yesterday which showed that food prices generally have fallen 19.6 percent below the index high of $7.3 reached on July 13 last year. The index stood at $5.28 on Oct. 1. 1946, and climbed steadily as price controls were removed gradually. It made its biggest Jump when President Truman decontrolled livestock and meat on Oct. 14, 1946. The next day the index stood at $6.15. A. F. Guckenberger, secretary of the New York State Food Merchants association, said some effects of the lowered wholesale prices would be reflected immediately on retail prices. But in othef cases. I he said, the price cuts will not |‘l ! il:->r down to the retail level for 1 a week.
