Value Os Windbreak Cited To Farmers Farmstead School Held Here Tuesday Purdue Foresters says, "We can stop the winter wind. At least that part that chills us as we go about doing the daily chores,” he added. This was the statement made at Decatur by A. T. Parrish, district extension forester during the farmstead improvement school, held here Tuesday. Mr. Parrish gave many pointers on planning and planting the farmstead windbreak. “Do a good job of planning,” he said, “and you can have something you will be proud of. Planning the windbreak can be part ot a movement to improve the appearance and utility of the farmstead. “Some times, to put the windbreak where it belongs, some fences have to be moved. Often these lot fences have outlived their usefulness and could well be taken out.” He illustrated how this might be done by using a mode) farm. “To do the most good, the windbreak should be about 150 feet from the center of the buildings. At least three rows of trees should be used. Red pine was recommended as the best tree to plant in most locations. These trees can be purchased from the state at a reasonable cost. You should see your county agent for tree order blanks early in the fall.

“In planting the trees, care must be taken to see that the roots are set straight and deep. They should be planted 12 feet apart in rows 12 feet apart. A staggered arrangement will give the trees room to develop. Last, the forester pointed out that the trees should be fenced in. No time during the life of the tree should livestock be allowed around it. Even old trees stand to lose their lower branches with this kind of treatment. Then the wind will sweep under the trees and they will be of little value as a windbreak. Most farms need only about 150 —2OO trees and will require less than half an acre. “If you feel that this small expense, space and a few hours time will .add to the value of your farm, plan to plant a windbreak now,” the forester challenged. t Trade in a G 0,.?
