Minnesota And Illinois Battle Saturday Night I Chicago, Jan. 24 — (UP) — The top game of the midwest basketball season was on deck today for Satuiday at Champaign when undefeated Minesota, winner of 13 straight games, tangles with mighty Illinois, loser of only one mat< h in tihe same number of contests. The clash might well decide the big nine championship. Both teams are undefeated in league play, but the Gophers have a technical hold on first place by virture of five league wins compared to Illinois’ three. The fighting Illini will be returning to the hardwood after a two week rest for semester examinations. Minnesota, during that period, has played three big nine foes, but their last match before the Illinois scrap was with Indiana Saturday, and the Gophers were certain to be in top shape. Illinois will put on display the highest scoring team in the league. The Harry Combes five has paraded to 917 points in its 13 games, an average of 70.5 counters per contest Minnesota, on the other hand, boasts a good defensive mark. Its opponents have scored only 543 points, an average of 41.7 per game. Minnesota has averaged 58.5 points per game while Illinois opponents have hit at a 54 point clip. Cage observers believed the game might he decided in the opening few minutes, contending that if 'Minnesota went ahead early it would resort to its possession game and Illinois would have trouble getting the ball to shooi. On the other hand if Illinois went in front in a hurry, the Gophers would have to switch to a more speedy game and wouldn't be able to keep up with the hurrying Illini. Minnesota showed its defensivt class in defeating Indiana Saturday, 35 to 28. The Gophers held Indiana without a field goal for 10 minutes of the first half and 19 of the sec ond, and with only three minutes to play were 17 points ahead. In another Saturday game Dick Schnittker returned to the Ohio State lineup to cage 18 points in 14 minutes and lead his mates to a 66 , to 56 win over Purdue. The scoring ( burst gave Schnittker 60 points for the three games in which he has played, and his 20 point per game ■ average was far the best in the lea ; gue. ■ Northwestern won its first league I contest over lowa, 65 to 44, to 1 close out the Saturday program 1 Willys Cars & Trucks ALSO USED CARS See “Doc” Vizard DOC’S CAR DOCK > —f r

National League To Play 179 At Night New York, Jan. 24 — (UP) —The National league, showing utter disregard for its electric light bills, will crack a Major league record for night games by playing 179 of them during 1949, the official schedule revealed today. Before the campaign comes to a close, it is likely that the league will play’ close to 200 games because of a prevalent practice among clubs to re-schedule rained-out day games as night games later on i:i the season. During 1948, the National league established a record for night games by playing 173 arc-contests, some 30 more than originally had been scheduled. Legislation enacted during the recent winter meetings, helped to boost the total of night games. It called for all clubs to play at least five night games in each opposing park if the home club so desires. The season will get under way on April 18 when the Braves and Phillies celebrate Patriot's day in Boston by playing a single game. The following day Brooklyn will be at New York, St. Louis at Cincinnati. Pittsburgh at Chicago and Philadelphia at Boston for a double-head-er. The annual all-star game will be held at Ebbets field. Brooklyn for he first time in ’. istory on Tuesla,’ ( July 12. Eaih of the 16 clubs are schedul- ' ed to play 154 games as per custom and the curtain comes down on the campaign Oct. 2.
