Otis Shifferly, Mrs. Carl Frey. ’ Mrs. B. P. Johnson. Annabelle Bebout and Bob Sprunger. Provide Placards For New Housing Special Service To Local Contractors As a special service to local contractors, the office of the housing expediter, through the local area rent office in Roome 228 of the Utility Building, Fort Wayne, will distribute red, white and blue ‘ veterans preference” placards to all builders of new housing that is to be offered for sale or for rent, according to John E. Williams, area rent director. These placards will provide builders of housing not being constructed for owner-occupancy with a convenient means of complying with the provision of the housing and rent act of 1948 that gives veterans of World War II or their families the right to have the first opportunity 'to buy or rent newly built family units, said Mr. Williams. Specifically, the law provides that no person may sell a single family residence (unless built for owneroccupancy) completed after June 30, 1947, and prior to April 1, 1949, unless .he first gives veterans preference in the purchase of the dwelling during the period of construction and for 30 days after completion. Further, if the dwelling remains unsold and the seller lowers the original offering-price, he must reoffer the dwelling to veterans for an additional 7-day period before it can be offered to the public. This 7-day additional offering-period applies to every subsequent lowering of price. This 7-day preference applies not to first sale at tne lowered price but also to all re-sale at any price. The same preference — during the period of construction and for 30 days thereafter, and an additional seven days if the original price is lowered — applies to the renting of housing accomodations designed for occupancy by other than transients. As in the case of dwellings built for sale, any rental accommodations completed after June 30, 1947, and prior to April 1, 1949, are subject to veterans preference. To make certain that veterans are

given reasonable opportunity to buy or rent such dwelling units, the owner must post a sign or placard in front of each housing structure, or on the ruction site, during construction and during the period of offering to veterans. The placards now available to builders who call at the area rent office provide space for all the information required by the veterans’ preference law, as follows: 1. The rental or sales price of the dwelling. 2. The fact that the accommodations are offered 'for sale or rent exclusively to veterans or families for the prescribed period. 3. The name and address of the person authorized to sell or rent the housing accommodations. Mr. Williams warned that the supply of placards on hand in his office is limited. Should the supply become exhausted, the builder will still be obligated to obtain and post a placard or sign as required by the regulation. Trade In a Good Town — Decatur
