Yellow Jackets Upset Huntington, 4 ” * 3
Decatur Hands Vikings First Loss Os Season Decatur's Yellow Jecyets turned, “giant killers" Tuesday night, handing the highly rated Huntington Vikings uheir first defeat of the season by a 42-39 score at the Yellow Jackets gym. Huntington had piled up an Impressive winning streak of 11 games without a loss this season and has been consistently rated in press association polls among the 10 top teams in the state. The Jackets, considerably outsized by the taller Vikings, put up their best game of the season, with the starting five playing the entire game without a substitution. iDecatur drew first blood when Harold Bohnke tapped ill a rebound after Dan Freeby missed a free throw, but Huntington quickly moved into the lead and the Vikings were on top at the end of the first quarter, 10-5. Huntington seemed on Its way to extending its winning streak when the Vikes hit a pair of field goals to open the second period but the Jackets finally began to find their shoottag eyes, pulling within one point of the visitors, 17-16, at the half. The third quarter was a nip and tuck affair, with the lead changing hands frequently. With one minute of the period to play, Decatur was out in front by a single point. 30-29, but Sam Bogner converted a free throw, Kenny Grant hit his third fielder of the quarter and Bohnke, added a foul toss to put the Yellow Jackets on top, 34-29. as the final minutes of play opened. Bogner hit a pair from the field in rapid fire fashion ami Decatur boas'ed a nine-point margin. The Jackets, sensing one of the season’s biggest upsets was in their hands, began to play carefully, and the Vikings, battling desperately to preserve their winning streak, were unable to make a serious threat to the Decatur margin, their closest approach being the final threepoint margin which marked the Decatur triumph. The Yellow Jackets had no individual stars last night, the five starters and finishers all playing treat ball throughout, taking excellent care of their taller opponents, (specially on rebounds. Bogner finished as Decatur’s leading scorer with 14 points, followed by Freeby with 12. Some said it was the worst in history. Percy said the storm was especially severe because it hung over one area for three days with Scarcely any movement. Today, the big blow was moving slightly northward into North Dakota. “It’s lost much of its strength,” Percy said. “Only scattered light snow is being reported and the wind has dropped to 40 or 45 miles an hour from yesterday’s top speed of 70 MPH." But, he said, the storm will continue to affect the nation’s weather for some days to come. “The blizzard was the center of a giant air vortex that swept the Is it drier than a desert in your house?
