Lancaster Bobcats Defeat Commodores

Wells County Five Defeats Commodores Lancaster's Bobcats made it 11 in a row without a loss Thursday night, defeating the Decatur Commodores, 44-31, at the Commodores gym in basketball’s final 1948 appearance for Decatur. The Commodores gave Bill Bryan's Wells county crew all they wanted to handle for the first three quarters, but faded in the final eight minutes as the Bobcats began finding the range to better effect. The Boocats broke away in front on a field goal and free throw by Crozier but the Commodores pulled up to a 5-5 tie when Jim Meyer hit the first of his five fielders of the night. Stern and Dave Gillig then traded buckets but the Wells county quintet pulled ahead to 11-7, Meyer’s second fielder then made the score 11-9 with five minutes of the game gone. Lancaster held a 14-10 advantage at the end of the first quarter and maintained this margin through the second period, holding a 21-17 advantage at the half-time intermission. Attempting to force the Commodores to pull their zone defense out on the floor, the Bobcats held the ball out starting the third quarter, with the result that only three points were scored in the first five minutes of the period. Lancaster increased its margin to six points as the quarter ended, 2822. The Bobcats hit three from the field in a hurry to open the final eight minutes of play and stayed comfortably in front for the rest of the ball game to win by 13 points. Worden’s 12 points paced the undefeated Bobcats, while Meyer’s 14 topped the Commodores. The Commodores next game will be one week from tonight, Jan. 7, when they travel out to Monmouth for their second meeting of the season with the Eagles. St. Louis U. Beats Kentucky In Sugar Bowl New Orleans, Dec. 31 — (UP) — A bright new star shone in the basketball sky today as St. Louis university crowed over a dramatic 42 to 40 conquest of Kentucky. That star was Lou Lehman. A substitute last season when the Biilikens bounded to the national invitational championship, he burst loose with the payoff punch just when St. Louis seemed destined for defeat last night in the Sugar Bowl tournament finals. Lehman will be remembered best by the 7,500 excitement - weakened fans for his driving-in field goal in the last minute and 15 seconds of play —for that was the goal which won the game. It sent St. Louis ahead, 41-40, and the only point scored afterward was a free throw after the game had eneded. But that was not the limit of Lehman's hand in this thriumph which maintained St. Louis’ unbeaten record and sent Kentucky down to defeat for the first time this season. In all, he scored 14 points, most of them in the second half rally which brought St. Louis to within grasping dis ance of victory. His quarter-court set shot with two and a half minutes to play tied the score at 36-36, marking the first time since the game’s early moments that Kentucky did not lead. |Easy Ed MaqAuley was bottled up all during the first half as
