Studies Method Os Testing Milk Robert Berning, manager of the Adams county artificial breeding association, has returned from Wisconsin, where he has studied the owner sampler method of testing milk. This program is connected chiefly with the artificial breeding organization which have been operating since 1942. Mr. Berning stated that in Wisconsin in 1948 450,009 cows were bred artifically and 210000 cows were tested for butterfat content of milk. There are 2 types of milk testing services available to every farmer. First is the D.H. I. A. or so called standard type. This is for proving sires, pedigrees and other uses requiring supervised testing. The tester visits the farm one day each month and weights and samples the milk. Samples are tested and feed and production records figured and kept in a book on the farm. The tester usually boarded one day each month. Second is the owner sampler type. This kind of testing is very inexpensive because the farmer himself weighs the milk and takes the sample one day each month. The tester picks them up, takes them to the laboratory where they are tested and the production figured for the month. The farmer does not need to board the tester, and he gets help on feeding and herd management problems. Os the cows on test in Wisconsin, 65% are on the owner sampler plan. In an interview with F- A. Stallord, University of Wisconsin, Mr. Berning quoted him as saying, “Only a small percentage of dairymen will show a profit in the next few years with present high feed and labor costs. Culling the hoarders through testing and using the best -breeding available is the key to profit." Mr. Stallord went on to say that many dairy farmers raised their butterfat 200 lbs. per cow since 1938 by using artificial breeding and testing each cow's milk monthly. The following services are rendered by testers, assist farmers in balancing, have grown feeds, help to do an intelligent job of culling their herd and assist dairymen in buying and selling good breeding stock.
