Fcreamed | Comments#! on s.s.'.ffii Lesson’s Creamed (Comments on the Sunday School Lesson, The World in Which Jesus Lived, Galatians 4:4; Luke 2:1-7; Matthew 22:15-23, for Sunday, January 2, 1949. For the next six months the Life of Jesus will be the subject of the Sunday school lessons. The next three months special attention will be given to Jesus' life in his Galilean ministry. In today’s lesson we shall see the purpose of God, the Providence of God, (he Word or God, and the government of God. These facts furnish the background of Jesus' life. V. 4. “But when the fullness of time was come, God sent forth his Son.'' Here is the purpose of God. “The fullness of time” was true because of political peace, receptive altitudes of the common people, religious teachings regarding the one true God, the open doors to I synagogues, a good language, free laud open transportation and a mes|sianic hope. i V. 1. "And it came to pass in ! those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed." Governments need to secure enrollment ■ <■:' its citizens and plan jor its financial support by means of taxes. It is God's Will that his children be loyal citizens and comply in national calls for identification and financial support. Where personal freedom is extended, each individual can help make good government by living lives of justice, righteousness, and good will. V. 3. "And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.” This plan of going to one's native town to be enrolled was a Jewish custom rather than a Roman requirement. This plan fitted into the program of God who would have filial respect to one's ancestors recognized. ■ Respect for a godly parent is a to a reverence for God. 1 Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city Os Nazateth Into Judea unto the city of | David, which is called Bethlehem; ' I because he was of the house and I lineage of David." There was no exception to this enrollment; hence, the use of the word “also." It is team work that counts in
Happiness is inside and comes from the use of whatever a man has to acquire, such things as friends, a clear conscience, a soul aglow with the wild joy of growing into a boundless wealth Os living: a sense of doing something worthwhile, of loving and receiving love, of belonging to a nobler order than sight reveals, of the security that comes from being a child of the infinite. These, all. are within ourselves. Whatever creates these inter satisfactions, is valuable. J. W. D. Lessen Prayer Lesson prayer: We are grate'ul o God for his eternal purpose vhich included a Saviour of the vorld. and for being included in hat purpose. government, in the home, or in the church. V. 5. "To be taxed with (Mary, his espoused wife, being great with child." The distance was 80 miles, no easy trip soi 1 Mary; but she would be a loyal subject with her husband taking her part in the call of the government. Mary followed the path of duty which was the pathway of God. V. 6. "And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered." Here is the way of human life aud Jesus entered into the world just as other children came to their earthly existence, thus, making a common tie with all humanity. V.7. “And she brought forth her first-born son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in’ a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.” The crowd was so large that there were no hotel accomodations and each one had to do the best he could in finding a place to stay. The circitastances of Jesus' birth among the lowly indicates that Jesus went to the level of the humblest, the poorest of men. In his ministry his lowly birth furnished a strong appeal for folks to follow him. V. 15. "Then went the Pharisees and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk." These Pharisees the very strict religious leaders, would not conform to the program of Jesus but sought by every means to catch him and thus discredit him. If one is determined to have his own way in life, God's will is discounted and discredited; but this attitude does not change the fact that Christ is the Saviour of the world, the very Son of God. V. 16. “And they seht out unto him their disciples with the Herodians saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God, neither carest thou for any man; for thou regardest not the person of men." This sentence is marked 'by what was not said about Jesus; these critics would say nice things about Jesus but would not. call him Saviour, less yet accept him as such. The world in whiiA Jesus lived was very much like oi» world where the same attitudes ar? seen. V. 23. "The same .'ey came to him the Sadducees whirs say there is no resurrection.” The Sadducees and Pharisees were not on good terms; but when it came to denouncing Jesus, they joined hands.
Cterlcus Says: Clericus says: "God has in mind better things for us and the world than we or any man dared to hope for. God will give us his greatest gifts if we are ready to receive them. A praying world, a church yielded to Christ and his spirit, a social order purged of its injustices — these things will bring down upon us a shower of God's plenteous blessings, if we will only let faith, hope, and love have their way with us and the world." Book Review Hymn FtOries of the 20th Century. by William J. Hart. W. A. Wilde Col, Is a collection of stories, unique in that It comes from our own century almost entirely. All are belated to a definite moment and to an unusual experience, such as the one which tells of the men in he submarine, their emotions finding expression in a hymn, or that which relates how the visiting Scotsman thrilled the Presbyterian gfoub in Philadelphia. 1 owe ohedi'nce of the conscience, to no mortal man. — W. Tfe'feO A new Order in the Civilization of Brotherly Men. Unless moral qualities of understanding and confidence shall form the foundations of international tangible relationships, international harmony and agreement can not be exipected; and the absence of harmonious agreement applied to the material conditions of intergovernment relationships shuts th e human race up to continued friction and beligerency. Progress Will stalemate. For existence to continue permanently on that level will be a denial of those instincts to progress which tl?us far have pushed man upward to his present attainments. Considerable as these attainments are, when measured by the short centuries of recorded history, no one in his right senses would wish to become a party to a declaration that civilization in its present circumstances has arrived at the top; that nothing, though conceivably better is ■possible. The key note to world peace is a civilization of brotherly men beginning with me.
