Jackets Hope To Snap Slump In Tournament The Decatur Yellow Jackets, hoping to rid themselves of a disastrous slump which has cost them a pair of decisive defeats in their last two outings, are hard at work this week at the direction of coach Bob Worthman in preparation for the annual New Years day tourney, which will be held at New Haven Saturday. The Yellow Jackets, defending champions, will meet the Berne Bears in the tourney opener at 2 p. m. Saturday. In the second afternoon tilt, the host New Haven Bulldogs will tangle with the Bluffton Tigers. Losers of the afternoon games will meet in a consolation tilt at 7 p. m.. followed by the championship encounter. New Haven is favored to win the tourney, having defeated both Decatur and Berne by decisive scores. In turn, both Decatur and Berne defeated Bluffton. The Yellow Jackets are the defending champions, having won the 1948 tourney, neld at Bluffton. Tickets for the holiday meet will be on sale at the New Haven gym the day of the tourney. Gates will open at 12:45 p. m. for the afternoon session and at 6 p. m. for the evening contests. Officials will be Lores Lehman of Decatur and Walter Bonham of Fort Wayne. For the accomodation of fans, lunch and sandwiches will be available at the New Haven high school between the afternoon and evening sessions. Indiana Beats Irish, Buller Downs Purdue Indianapolis, Dec. 29.—(UP)— Purdue, unbeaten until it vied in the ‘‘Hoosier classic” holiday tourney, was licking its wounds today after two defeats from state, rivals, but Indiana and Notre Dame wiped their brows in relief that they could salvage .500 tourney averages. Butler’s Bulldogs, hosts to the other three college basketball outfits in the second renewal of the state “big four" tourney, were riding on a wave of increased prestige. They had snapped two Big Nine win strings, even if only in tourney play. Purdue's Boilermakers, after six wins in regular season play, bowed to Notre Dame in a thriller on the opening night of the two-day tourney Monday.
