Decafur Neels Berne In First Tourney Game The Decatur Yellow Jackets and Berne Bears will tangle in the opening game of the annual New Years day tourney, according to a draw for the meet? made this morning. The Jackets and Bears will meet in the opener at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon, Jan. 1. at the New Haven gym, site of the 1949 tourney. The Bluffton Tigers and New Haven Bulldogs will clash in the second game of the afternoon. Losers in the afternoon games will meet in a consolation game at 7 p. m„ followed by the championship tilt between the afternoon winners. In previous years, the meet was conducted as a "blind" tourney, with the draw made only one hour before the first game was scheduled. Officials for all games will be Walt Bonham, of Fort Wayne, and Lores Lehman, Decatur, recognized as two of the best officials in this section of the state. Decatur is the defending champion, winning the 194 S tourney, held at Bluffton, defeating Bluffton in the afternoon game and Berne in the championship encounter. College Basketball Purdue 54. VFW-Theater Party On Friday Afternoon
Decatur youngsters are eargerly awaiting the annual V. F. W.Adams theater kiddie show and part}' to be held at o’clock Friday afternoon at the local playhouse. Tickets have been distributed to (he city's boys and girls in the Lincoln* and St. Joseph schools, up to qnd including the sixth grade. A committee from V. F. W. will be on hand to co-operate with Roy Kalver, theater manager, in insuring the party’s success. An estimated 800 kids are expected to witness the hour-long cartoon and comedy show, and partake of the goodies iwhich will be given out. Teen-Agers Dance Christmas Night The annual Christmas dance for teen agers of Decatur and community will be held at the American Legion home Christmas night, Saturday, from 9 to 12 o’clock. No admission- will be charged, with the Legion providing the dance hall and orchestra. All teenagers of the community, including those home from College are invited. The Den, Decatur’s youth center, will be open during the dance intermission for refreshments. The Den till be closed Christmas eve and Christmas day, also on New Years eve and New Years day. Otherwise, regular hours will be observed next week. Chester Brodbeck To Head Monroe Firemen ‘Berne, Dec. 23 — Chester Brodbeck is tht< new president of the Monroe fire department ifor 1949. He succeeds Elmo Stucky. Othernew officers are Art Raudenbush, vice president; Weldon Stucky, secre-tary-treasurer and Paul Lobsiger, assistant secretary-treasurer. Paul Balmer resigned as a member of the department and was voted an hono:ary life membership. The firemen are sponsoring a Christmas party for the kids of Monroe and community tonight. Santa Claus wil distribute treats to the youngsters. Hartford City Store Purchase Announced Announcement was made today by Paul Reidenbach, owner of the Daisy Mae fruit market in this city, of the purchase of the City fruit market at Hartford City. The new outlet, which will also be known as Daisy Mae, will be managed by Jack Fisher, of this city, an employe of the local market for the past four years. Reelect Mary Smith To Magazine Staff iMiss Alary Smith, 615 Nuttman avenue, was reelected a home economies edi or of The Agriculturist, magazine published by students in the school of agriculture of Purdue University. A member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority, Miss Smith is a senior in the school of home economics. “Cook’s Corner," written by Miss Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. C.
