Recruiting Sialion Opened In Decatur Permanent Station For Two Counties A permanent U. S. army and air force recruiting station for Adams and Wells counties has been opened at 117 Nor.h Second street, w*itti S/Sgt. Gordon O. Shaw in charge. The office is open six days a week from 8:30 a.m. to 5 ip.m. After enlisting men from the two counties for a year, Sgt. Shaw finally won his battle to have a recruiting station set up in Decatur. He said the office will try to solve the problems of enlistees, veterans, parents of servicemen and any other interested persons. Sgt. Shaw estimated that 40 percent of the men he has signed up during the past year have been I veterans. He said the cutbacks in the z draft quota probably would have no effect on enlistments, because ‘‘the fellows who come here have made up their minds they want to sign up, regardless of anything else.” An ,engineer and gunner in the 379th bomb group of the Eighth air force, Sgt. Shaw was shot down over Nantes, France, and was a prisoner of the Germans for 21 months. He was liberated by the Thirteenth armored division. “I’ve yet to meet anyone else (from the 379th," he mused. ‘'Maybe it’s because the average life of a gunner in the outfit was 52 minutes.” Hailing from Elwood, Sgt. Shaw takes care of enlistments in the army, air force, WAC and WAF. His commanding officer is Capt. Arthur P. Shervin, in Fort Wayne. HIGH COURT ‘ (Cont. From Fage One) ion, written by chief justice Oliver Starr? sai,d Watts’ confession was not gained by state police intimidation. And the court said it.did not “condone" the remarks by Stark, who is Marion county prosecutor, hut found they were more than outweighed by circuit judge Harold Barger’s actions in telling the jury to disregard them.
