It was not clear how Sun hoped that negotiations might begin, but his statement appeared to he an open hid to the communists to seek peace talks. Liberal elements among the Chinese nationalists have suggested previously that a settlement might be reached in which the communists would join in a coalition government, in which they would hold no more than an equal' share of power with the national-j ists. Chinese reorts said meanwhile' that communist forces driving along the Grand canal had reached within a few miles of Kiangtu (Yangchow), only 48 miles northeast of Nanking, and might soon reach the north bank of the Yangtze river. From the north bank of the Yangtze the communists could threaten Chinkiang, astride the; railway from Nanking to Shanghai and only 35 miles east of the capital city. Trude in a Good Town — Decatur
