Major League Clubs Close WinferMeef ’ , Chicago. Dec. 15—(UP)— Branch • Rickey announced today that the Brooklyn Dodgers have traded outfielder Pete Reiser to the Boston Braves for Mike McCormick and a minor league player to be named later. Rickey said it was a straight player deal with no cash involved. It was one of the most signifiJ cant trades announced during the ; cuiTent swapping session. The deal was disclosed a day after ! major league magnates adjourned their two-day session here. Three other big trades had been announced previously. One was {he sending of first baseman Eddie Waitkus and pitcher Hank Borowy to.the Philadelphia Phillies from the Chicago Cubs. In return the Cubs got pitchers Emil (Dutch) Leonard and Walter (Hot Dog) Dubiel. Os this quartet, only Waitkus | has been a sought-after ball player. | ) The left handed hitter had a .296 j 'i mark and drove in 44 runs in 139 I games last season. He particular- i ! ly impressed Branch Rickey of the Dodgers who' tried at length to swing a deal for him. Borowy won only five games and lost 10 last season and had an unimpressive earned run mark of 4.89. Leonard, the ancient kuncklei ball castoff of the Washington ) I Senators, won 12 and lost 17 and I had a 2.51 earned run figure. Dubiel. an ex-Yankee won eight and lost 10 and his earned run figure was 2.51. That transaction was like the' 1 others—the players involved usually were not top grade stars. An , example was the Cleveland-Wash- ' ington swap in which the Senators I got pitchers Ed Klieman and Joe Haynes and first baseman Eddie Robinson for pitcher Early Wynn and first baseman Mickey Vernon. The biggest cash deal was made) by the Yankees, who gave up SIOO,- ' 000 and three players to the St. Louis Browns for pitcher Fred San-1 ford and catcher Roy Partee. The 1 Yankee players involved were 1 catcher Sherman Lollar. and pitch-) ers Dick Starr and Charley (Red I Embree. The first of the big off season i

THE DECATUR DAILY DEMOCRAT, DECATUR, INDIANA

deals came last week in Minneapolis when the Cubs traded catcher Clyde McCullough and pitcher Cliff Chambers to Pittsburgh for third baseman Frankie Gustine and pitcher Cal McLish. ) That other deals might be ex- | pected was seen in the fact that : most club owners expressed theiri- ■ selves as being far from satisfied with their present rosters. The Cinj cinnati Reds worked at length to -j complete a transaction with the 3 Boston Braves in which they hoped . to get outfielder Tommy Holmes. ! The. Braves were interested in 1 pitchers, principally young Howard . Fox, but the Reds still emphasized they weren’t dealing in any hurlt ers until they find out definitely whether Ewell Blackwell's shoulder ) injury has healed. J There were a number of second- ’ ary deals during the two meetings, ' the minor conclave in Minneapolis ,) and the majors here. I Latest of these was the sending of Carve! (Barna) Rowell, utility j Philadelphia Phillies’ infielder to the Minneapolis club of the AmeriI can association in a straight cash deal. The White Sox also announcI ed that Pete Fox. former Tiger and . Red Sox outfielder had been made . manager of their Hot Springs, Ark.. ) farm club in the Cotton States , league. '[ In the final joint session of the ) ‘ major leagues .yesterday, the club ) | owners turned down a plea of Pacific Coast league president Clarence Rowland and Hollywood team pre- ) 1 sident Victor Collins to increase the player draft price from SIO,OOO to $25.01)0. The coast league officials also were brushed off on their appeal to change from four to six years the period in which they j can retain a player before he can ' be drafted by the majors. Commissioner A. B. Chandler 1 said he would not announce h,'» ! findings until sometime in January : on the hearing yesterday in which I Leo Duroeher and other Giant officials were charged with signing Fred Fitzsimmons as coach before he was released by the Braves. Chandler said he; wants time to di gest the transcript of proceedings.
